According to the latest Trends in Mortality Report from the World Health Organization, Ethiopia's maternal mortality rate has reduced by 78% between 2000 and 2023. Global funding cuts, however, are putting at risk the significant gains made for mothers and their newborns globally. WHO warns that the world is currently off-track to meet the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal target for maternal survival and urgent investment is needed to prevent maternal deaths. This year's #WorldHealthDay is shining a light on maternal and newborn health. Every year, around 300,000 women globally lose their lives during childbirth and approximately 4 million babies are stillborn or die in their first weeks of life. Dr Catherine Hamlin understood that this loss of life was preventable, and established the Hamlin College of Midwives. Deployed back to their rural communities, these midwives not only prevent obstetric fistula, but provide essential and often life-saving care to new mothers and their babies. #maternalhealthcare #childhealth #midwifery

After a year of suffering, Abebech’s heart leapt when she heard there was a cure. The medical staff at Hamlin’s Yirgalem Fistula Hospital sent an ambulance to her village to collect her. “I was warmly welcomed. The care I received at the centre exceeded what I had experienced from my family. They provided meals, changed the sheets regularly, and offered breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Everything was free.” 📖 Read Abebech's story: https://lnkd.in/gcbJWB6Q #obstetricfistula #maternalhealth

Project Zero is Hamlin's road map for a Fistula-Free Ethiopia. Going door-to-door across the country, our goal is to find and treat every woman in Ethiopia living with obstetric fistula, while also doing everything in our power to prevent future child birth injuries. With our third pilot in Seharti now underway, progress is already being made. We are also excited to announce the commencement of our 4th pilot in Fedis Woreda. This is supported by the Australian Embassy in Ethiopia through the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade's Direct Aid Program and Catherine Hamlin Fistula Foundation in Australia. Our goal is to end fistula. Forever.

Less than 50% of women in Ethiopia fully understand obstetric fistula, according to new research in AJOG Global Reports, published by Elsevier. This highlights why our Project Zero initiative is so crucial. Through a nationwide community education campaign, our teams travel to rural areas to raise awareness about safe childbirth practices, obstetric fistula, birth injuries, and the treatment options available to women. We're working to ensure every woman has access to the knowledge and care she needs to give birth safely. 📚 Read the paper: https://lnkd.in/gndNky7D #MaternalHealth #ProjectZero #ObstetricFistula

Last year, Karen visited Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia's Desta Mender centre, meeting those taking part in our Women's Empowerment Program. One of the participants, Abebech, is on a journey of renewal—learning literacy, numeracy and vocational skills as she rebuilds her life after successful #obstetricfistula surgery.

Accelerate action. This is the theme of #IWD2025 and Sister Konjit Kassahun, Project Zero and Prevention Manager at Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia, is doing just that. To eradicate obstetric fistula, we must ensure all rural women can access quality maternal healthcare in reach of their homes and communities.
