  • Inspiring! A wonderful collaboration between these eminent and dedicated heart surgeons. Congratulations to the QCH team and our very best wishes to Benjamin and his family. #PEARS #BTCHealth

The Queensland Children's Hospital (QCH) has successfully completed the first ROSS-PEARS procedure in the Southern Hemisphere. This innovative operation, which builds on the PEARS procedure, has revolutionized treatment options for children with aortic root conditions. The UK’s Dr Conal Austin first visited QCH in 2019 to assist with the world's first paediatric PEARS procedure. His recent return to QCH, collaborating with Deputy Director of Cardiac Surgery Dr Prem Venugopal and Director of Cardiac Surgery Dr Nelson Alphonso, showcases the incredible importance of international collaboration in advancing medical care. Dr Venugopal said: "We can go overseas and train, or you get the experts to come here, use our resources then procedures can be replicated for all kids with heart conditions in Queensland." Since 2019, 15 children have benefited from the PEARS procedure at QCH. The most recent milestone was achieved when 17-year-old Benjamin Duckett became the first Queensland patient to undergo the new ROSS-PEARS procedure. This remarkable achievement underscores the power of knowledge-sharing and global cooperation in providing world-class care to young patients. Read more here 👉 https://bit.ly/3DgTe5b
