  • 💪 The Wonthaggi Miners Women's Auxiliary Marches Forward this #IWD2025 The year was 1934, and a five-month coal miners' strike was underway in Wonthaggi. At the heart of the community’s struggle was Agnes CHambers, Agnes Doig and the Wonthaggi Miners Women's Auxiliary (WMWA), the first women's auxiliary of a mining union. Initially formed to raise funds and offer support for miners fighting against poor working conditions and decreased pay, these women’s efforts extended far beyond the strike. After the coal dust settled, they continued their advocacy, lobbying for essential women’s amenities, educating local women on mining and political issues, and securing much-needed services like a maternity wing at the Miners' Hospital, a restroom for mothers, a kindergarten, and a public library. Their actions laid the foundation for the Wonthaggi and Gippsland communities we know today. 🎉Today, on International Women’s Day, Bass Coast Shire Council is beyond proud to announce the success of our application of funding for round two of the Victorian Women’s Public Art Program, which will now fund the creation of a public artwork to honour these extraordinary women. Today's announcement is the next step towards a new public art commission that involves the development, selection, and execution of creative concepts. The artwork will be a contemporary installation located within the conceptual 'hem' of the Union Theatre. It is inspired by the story of the lengths women will go to keep their communities alive. They were women holding the crucible of their community, filling it with a deep belief in social justice and cooperation. Last month, we also celebrated the centenary of the Union Theatre, with a special screening of Strikebound and an exclusive ‘In Conversation’ with award-winning director Richard Lowenstein. The film, shot in Wonthaggi, captures the struggles of the 1930s miners, and eagle-eyed viewers would have noticed the portrayal of the Wonthaggi Miners Women’s Auxiliary, with Agnes Doig played by Carol Burns, depicted as the central character. Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Rochelle Halstead reflected on the significant day and the Women who shaped our region, saying: 💬“International Women’s Day gives me pause to reflect on the women who shaped our region. In 1934, it’s unlikely these women ever imagined their struggle would transcend time or be celebrated through art and cinema. The concept of International Women's Day would have been unimaginable, and they may have wondered who would ever celebrate their legacy” “I’m proud to say today that we will celebrate.” 📸: The Wonthaggi Miners Women's Auxiliary participating in a march, a fortuitous moment that matches with this year's IWD theme, #MarchForward 📸: Bass Coast Mayor Rochelle Halstead with Jordan Crugnale MP at the entrance of The Union Theatre, Wonthaggi. #VWPAP #BepARTofChange

  • Some of our #TeamBassCoast staff and friends braved the heat yesterday to participate in the Midsumma Festival Pride March on Sunday. Parade, pride, and party come together each year in Melbourne. Where marchers join with workmates, clubs, family, friends, or lovers—whether as allies or as part of the queer community. Led by our Equity, Diversity and Inclusion committee, we proudly marched under the crew’s chosen theme, "Waves of Love", bringing the spirit of our beautiful coastline to celebrate and support the LGBTQIA+ community and don't they look fab!? 🌈 A recent Gippsland Pride Initiative report showed: 💔 29% of participants faced homophobic harassment at work 💔 45.5% felt they couldn’t be their whole selves at school 💔 When asked if participants had considered or experienced self-harm or suicidal thoughts in the last 12 months, 57 said they had, while alarmingly 123 (70.3%) had considered self-harm or suicide in their lifetime. These numbers highlight why showing up matters—to our community, colleagues, and workplace. We are committed to inclusion, equality, and ensuring everyone feels safe, valued, and seen in Bass Coast. If you, or anyone you know, needs help or someone to talk to, please contact Beyond Blue on 1300 224 636 or Lifeline on 13 11 14. #midsumma
