The 6th International Forum on Additive Manufacturing was held last week which our Additive Manufacturing Technologist Daniel Williams travelled to Melbourne to attend. This fantastic event was organised and hosted by the RMIT Centre for Additive Manufacturing, bringing together 150 additive manufacturing (AM) specialists worldwide. The two days were filled with presentations from researchers, printer manufacturers, and companies who utilise AM. This included a presentation from University of South Australia Professor Colin Hall. He highlighted the capabilities of UniSA and Future Industries Institute (FII) including ANFF South Australia Industry 4.0 Test Lab. He also presented their research through the ARC Training Centre in Surface Engineering for Advanced Materials (SEAM) on acoustic defect identification in AM parts. Chip laser frequency comb PhD scholarship Are you a student looking to undertake a PhD in experimental laser physics and photonics? The Laser Physics and Photonics Devices Lab at the University of South Australia is offering a 3.5 years PhD scholarship funded by the ARC COMBS Centre of Excellence – combs.org.au (also covers tuition fees). The PhD project is based at the Mawson Lakes Campus of the University of South Australia in the Laser Physics and Photonics Devices Labs (LPPDL). The project will further develop high performance compact frequency comb chip lasers and develop skills and expertise in experimentation, free space optical alignment, optical fibers, waveguide lasers, frequency comb lasers, laser modelling, metrology, and astronomy. The successful candidate will undertake cutting edge laser research at the LPPDL’s state of the art laser research facilities and advance our unique in-house invented and fabricated chip lasers. The exquisite timing and colour of these frequency comb lasers will revolutionize how we navigate, sense the physical world, communicate, explore the galaxy, and contribute to medical advances. You will be part of the Australia Research Centre of Excellence (combs.org.au) which spans 8 Australian universities and be co-supervised by appropriate COMBS Chief Investigators (a number of projects are available) including experts in laser comb technology, timing/ metrology, optical materials, astronomy, and spectroscopy. Note that UniSA + University of Adelaide will merge in 2026 to become Adelaide University. Last week we welcomed a Year 12 CAD CAM class from Pedare Christian College to conduct material testing towards their SACE Stage 2 assessment.   The students had brought in 3D printed samples with various settings and materials for tensile, bending and impact testing. ANFF South Australia's WILLEMIN-MACODEL SA 408MT in action with preliminary machining of polymer optics. The parts will then be single point diamond turned on our Precitech Nanoform 700 Ultra.   The 408MT is a multi-process machining centre dedicated to machining parts with complex geometry.
