Research that promises to help tens of thousands of ICU patients across Australia each year has been recognised by one of the country’s leading medical research councils. Specialist physiotherapist at The Alfred, Prof Carol Hodgson (pictured left), was awarded the NHMRC Elizabeth Blackburn Investigator Grant Awards - Clinical Medicine and Science (Leadership) – for her work 'Improving the quality of survival after critical illness.' Her work focuses on linking datasets to better understand survival after ICU for people with various illnesses, and will ultimately support the development and implementation of international best practice guidelines. "Patients who are admitted to intensive care and require mechanical ventilation for life support account for 63,000 ICU admissions and 8,190 deaths each year in Australia," Prof Hodgson said, who is also Director of Monash Partners Research Translation Centre. "My research will transform outcomes for these patients by using data within registries and electronic medical records to perform high-impact, low-cost clinical trials, generating new knowledge to inform national guidelines and policies and training the next generation of researchers." Two researchers at The Alfred have been recognised for their work in transforming how treatment for patients with chronic respiratory conditions, such as chronic asthma, emphysema and chronic bronchitis, is delivered. Prof Anne Holland, Professor of Physiotherapy and Head of Respiratory Research at Alfred Health and Monash University, and Principal Research Fellow A/Prof Narelle Cox (both pictured far right) have developed an innovative remote rehabilitation program, which combines technology, community support and best-practice exercise programs to make accessing rehabilitation easier for regional and metropolitan patients. Their research paper, Tele-rehabilitation for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, was last night published in the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC)'s '10 of the Best’ publication (16th edition), which celebrates outstanding health and medical research that responds to national health priorities. “People with lung disease get a pretty raw deal,” said Prof Holland. “For the very disabled population—who are often very breathless, often from low socioeconomic circumstances—the burden of getting to rehabilitation programs is too much.” “They not only have to deal with a debilitating condition and very distressing breathlessness, but they also have to deal with substantial stigma from society and at times issues accessing services." The trial is now referenced in global guidelines for treating people with chronic respiratory conditions, and is being embedded in widespread clinical practice. La Trobe's School of Nursing and Midwifery is recruiting for a Senior Lecturer in Nursing. The successful candidate will have expertise in contemporary nursing practice and facilitating undergraduate and postgraduate education. Today we mark World TB Day, a day when we come together to raise awareness about the devastating health, social and economic consequences of tuberculosis (TB) and to step up our combined efforts to end the global TB epidemic. We have several programs our researchers are working on that aim to reduce the burden of this disease. One of those programs is the Structured Operational Research and Training IniTiative (SORT-IT). With support from our local partners and in close collaboration with the Indonesian and Papua New Guinean governments, the specialised training program for healthcare workers aims to improve healthcare delivery and outcomes by searching for knowledge on strategies, interventions or tools that can enhance the performance of local health programs to address TB. Indonesia and Papua New Guinea (PNG) have some of the highest rates of TB in the world and we’re proud to be working closely with these countries to change that. Last week, 21 researchers from Alliance partners Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute, Burnet Institute, Monash Translational Medicine, and Monash Public Health and Preventive Medicine received a combined $42.9M in National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Investigator Grants. Congratulations to all of our recipients, these grants demonstrate how much ground-breaking research is conducted on our precinct.

Susan Davis AO and Dr Rakib Islam from our Women's Health Research Program, and Vilija Jokubaitis and Helmut Butzkueven from Monash Translational Medicine are celebrating a generous $250,000 grant from MS Australia that'll see them join forces to better understand the intersection between Multiple Sclerosis and menopause. With MS usually diagnosed between 20-40years, most women with the condition will transition through menopause after diagnosis. The significant overlap in some symptoms - including sleep and mood disturbances, changes in bladder function, and sexual dysfunction - makes it challenging to identify causes and manage them effectively. Their study will help understand the experiences of this group of women, and compare them to those of women without MS. Alfred Research Alliance

Nurses play a critical role in managing mental state deterioration (MSD) in acute hospital settings, yet challenges such as limited training, communication barriers, and inconsistent escalation pathways often hinder timely and effective care. Research by Zimbabwe-native Tendayi Bruce Dziruni, PhD Candidate, Deakin University has been published and highlights the need for; ✅ Targeted training to improve nurses' clinical skills, knowledge, and confidence in assessing and escalating MSD risks timely. ✅ Collaborative teamwork and communication to improve coordination and management of MSD. ✅ Organisational support through extra resources, structured guidelines, and escalation workflows. “Improving MSD management isn’t only just about interventions, it’s about ensuring staff feel confident, supported, and prepared to respond effectively. Let’s bridge the gap between policy and practice to improve both patient safety and staff well-being.” Bruce said.
