autodidact
autodidact
(to-ddkt) noun
A self-taught person.
[From Greek
autodidaktos, self-taught : auto-, auto- + didaktos, taught.
See DIDACTIC.]
- autodidactic
adjective
An autodidact is a
self-taught person. Throughout history, individuals have sought
to master subjects from outside the mainstream of conventional
education. Many of these have been self-deluding dilettantes,
akin to the autodidact of Jean Paul Sartre's Nausea. However,
some have mastered their disciplines and because of their lack
of ordinary formation, have excelled and made innovative
contributions.
- "The only thing
that interferes with my learning is my education."
- "It is a miracle
that curiosity survives formal education."

you ready?
you are enrolled
in a full time informal school called life on planet
earth. every person or incident is the universal
teacher. let me repeat that. every person or
incident is the universal teacher. there are no mistakes,
only lessons. growth is a
process of
experimentation. failures are as much as part of the
process as success. a lesson is repeated until it is
learned. it is presented to you in various forms
until you learn it. then you can
go on to the next
lesson. you will know you've learned a lesson when
your actions change.
wisdom is
practice.
there is no better
than here. when your there becomes a here,
you will simply obtain another there that will look better
than here
others are only mirrors of you.
[...]
your life is up to
you.
life provides the
canvas... you do the painting...
you always get
what you want ... your subcultures rightfully determine
what energies, experiences and people you are
attract...
therefore the only
foolproof way is to know what you want is to see what you
have...
there are no victims, only students
there is no right
or wrong, but there are consequences...
moralizing doesn't help
judgement only holds the patterns in place...
just do your
best...
born in
california...
wow...what a
rush.
on the outside,
you can see the difference. on the inside, you can
feel the difference. feel the difference.
catch you later...

Universities and
Colleges
I am not
impressed
by the Ivy League establishments. Of course they graduate the
best- it's all they'll take, leaving to others the problem of
educating the country. They will give you an education the way
the banks will give you money- provided you can prove to their
satisfaction that you don't need it. Peter De Vries (1910-93),
U.S. author. The narrator (Joe Sandwich), in The Vale of
Laughter, pt. 1, ch. 4 (1967).

"Well, these people
have clearly never read Thomas Kuhn's _The Structure of
Scientific Revolution_. The only people who ever advance
science forward are the people who come from
the edge, from the
outside, usually
amateurs,
usually not institutional. The way scientific advance happens
is though completely irrational bursts of brilliance. Then
they create a scenario of careful research and cross-checked
data and slow accumulation. It doesn't happen like that.
People are free to dismiss me, I don't even necessarily say
they're wrong. The ideas need to be judged on their own merit.
If they're saying they can't be
true because I take drugs, that's like
saying 'It can't be true because he's a Jew' or 'It can't be
true because he's a homosexual.' These are not sufficient
reasons to dismiss anybody's ideas."
[...]
You see, what happened
in the 60's, the first postwar generation came of age that had
been given what was then called a liberal education. When
you're given a liberal education you read John Stuart Mill,
Rousseau, Voltaire. What this makes you is a social critic.
They said, my god, we're financing our own suicide! We don't
want tens of millions of 25 year olds asking why we are not
following John Stuart Mill's prescription for liberty. They
said the universities must be turned into trade schools.
Forget Western philosophy, art, and culture. Teach these
people data entry, management skills, financial skills, and
high tech. And this is what has happened. I think that the
idea of universal, public liberal education was... they
realized we'll all hang if we proceed along this path, and so
they stopped it. And now people are given 6.5 hours of TV a
day, the Brady Bunch, all this. Idiot jobs, idiot political
choices, and people are completely diverted by... Michael
Jordan's father's problems, baby so and so who was carried to
term by a
camel and a
contract which is now being debated...

"My education was of
the most ordinary description, consisting of little more than
the rudiments of reading, writing, and arithmetic at a common
day school. My hours out of school were passed at home
and in the streets." Michael Faraday, who had little
mathematics and no formal schooling beyond the primary grades,
is celebrated as an experimenter who discovered the induction
of
electricity. He
was one of the great founders of modern physics. It is
generally acknowledged that Faraday's ignorance of mathematics
contributed to his inspiration, that it compelled him to
develop a simple, nonmathematical concept when he looked for
an explanation of his electrical and magnetic phenomena.
Faraday had two qualities that more than made up for his lack
of education: fantastic intuition and independence and
originality of mind.
How you can profit
from the school hoax
Richard J. Maybury
lists the six characteristics that an "illiteracy mill" would
have to have.
Summarized as follows:
- Curiosity is
spontaneous and must be suppressed.
Prohibit
spontaneity and regiment learning so that children are
taught things when the system decides, not when they want to
learn them.
- Remove children
from the adult world so that they are deprived of role
models, and cannot learn by copying adults.
- Enact child
labour laws so that anyone trying to escape from the
illiteracy mill has nowhere else to go. No apprenticeship
system means they won't be able to learn a trade by copying
adults.
- Force children by
law to attend, thereby making learning a job, a chore, an
obligation; definitely not fun. Supplant curiosity by
drudgery.
Prison
dulls the mind.
- Coercing the
children also helps wipe out the teacher's desire to teach.
It creates massive problems of motivation and discipline.
Teachers commonly quit after a few years of attempting to
combine the roles of entertainer and enforcer in an effort
to get something done.
- Last but not
least, everyone should be forced to pay for the mill no
matter what their mill does to children's minds. And
there are no refunds. If a child comes out of the system
with his brain turned to mush, the parents should still be
forced to pay, every year for the rest of their lives.

What Paul Kammerer
would call a series, someone like Henry Louis Gates would call
"signifyin'" - it's all about how we play with
perception of
events, and this is the link that I make between DJ culture,
techno-science, and the art of everyday creativity in a
digital environment.
I'm not really concerned with the "academy" per se - it's one
reflection of the illusions of class structure and hierarchy
that have clouded any real progressive contexts of criticism
and that I think have been an absolute bane to any kind of
creativity in American culture for the last decade or so. When
theory gets too in the way of culture, it's dead. Period. No
comma, no colon, no semi-colon... it's the end of the
sentence, and it's time for a new paragraph. Turn the page,
close the book, check a different website, 'cause that's when
things get really really boring. I think that
youth culture
reflexively understands this.
Part of my goal was to
bypass the notion of the "critic" as an "authority" who
controls narrative, and to create a new role that's alot more
concurrent with web culture: you become the cultural producer
and content provider at the same time. It's a role
consolidation... Especially when you're in a situation where
the pop culture mags are terrible and the art/theory stuff is
so out of touch with what's going on... it's
time for a new
situation. End the mix tape, stop the CD player, press cancel
on that file that was downloading... whatever... I started
dj'ing as a conceptual art project that critiqued alot of the
absolutely terrible things I see in American media, and the
end result was to create my own platform - social sculpture -
self as shareware or generative syntax for a new
language of
creativity, or something like that.

To understand human
language, we need to place ourselves within the context of
Earth as a self-organizing
reality. The Earth taught
itself how to create the photosynthetic
processes, how to
bloom forth with the power of the angiosperms, how to create
topsoil; Earth did not learn these things from Mars or the
Andromeda Galaxy. Earth education is self-education.
Humans are engaged in
the same dynamic of self-educating reality. So, here we
sit, talking, a further development of the ancient Earth
activity of education. Our situation involves something
new - self-reflexion - manifested especially through
language, but
language itself is just a part of a larger teaching
process. We sit, talking, engaged in the education
process of the Earth.

full development of the individual... there is this kind
of arrested, prolonged adolescence... and it's created
through institutions... institutions are a demonic force
in human life because they give permission for us to cease
developing and to put our loyalty behind some weird creed
that has been worked out..."

- "around 3000
years ago, a group of human beings in Athens, Greece,
developed a new philosophy... the basic religion of
humanity, is called humanism... Socrates said, the aim of
human life is to know thyself... create and design your
own order out of
chaos... Socrates did not give
commandments, Socrates did not impose order, Socrates
asked questions... he encouraged to speculate, design,
create, interact their own versions of
reality...
Socrates said the way to perform philosophy, in small
groups, raising questions, learning from each other,
change, changing your mind, growing together, linking
together... "
- "it has been
the authorities, the political, religious, educational
authorities, who attempted to comfort us by giving us
order, rules, regulations, in-forming, forming our minds,
with their view of reality... to think for yourself, you
must question authority, and learn how to put yourself in
a state of vulnerable open mindedness, chaotic, confused,
vulnerability, to
inform yourself..."
