A just system must reflect the diversity of the people it serves. This was a key takeaway from today’s plenary session at the IAWJ Biennial Conference, which focused on women judges taking the lead and making a difference in the international judiciary. Judge Maria Josefina G. San Juan-Torres called for a reimagining of women’s empowerment – not as something granted, but as something lived and led by women themselves. She reinforced that women are not waiting to be included, they are actively reshaping systems and leading with purpose and integrity. Judge Amy Sakalauskas, representing the International Association of LGBTQ+ Judges, spoke powerfully about the importance of inclusivity and visibility within the judiciary. She underscored the need for LGBTQ+ individuals, especially youth, to see themselves reflected in positions of authority. South Africa is proud to host this impactful conference – one that not only challenges the status quo but redefines what true empowerment looks like. #SANCB #HomeOfG20 #ReKaofela #MeetInSouthAfrica

For the first time in history, the IAWJ Biennial Conference is being hosted on African soil. Day one sparked meaningful dialogue around the theme, ‘Resilience: Women in Leadership to End Gender-Based Violence and Femicide.’ This year’s conference brought together approximately 900 judges, magistrates, legal professionals, and policymakers from around the globe at the CTICC.  The SANCB is proud to support business events and champion the procurement of international bids like the IAWJ conference. Thank you to our local thought leaders and panellists for their valuable contributions to the urgent global conversation on ending gender-based violence and femicide, through judicial leadership and activism. #SANCB #MeetInSouthAfrica #HomeOfG20 #ReKaofela

The journey to bring the IAWJ Biennial Conference to South Africa began back in April 2023. Earlier today, Judge President Thoba Poyo-Dlwati reflected on the extensive efforts behind securing the conference, including collaborating with South African Tourism to submit the official bid in Morocco. “A special word of thanks must go to South African Tourism for their unwavering support. Without their partnership both [logistical] and financial, this event would not have been possible.” Judge Poyo-Dlwati added, seeing this event come to life on African soil is not only a moment of immense pride but also a testament to what can be achieved through collaboration and shared purpose. #SANCB #MeetInSouthAfrica #HomeOfG20 #ReKaofela

It was a proud moment for SAC-IAWJ, the South African chapter of the IAWJ, as President Cyril Ramaphosa delivered the keynote address at the IAWJ Biennial Conference. He thanked delegates for choosing South Africa as the host nation and highlighted the country’s ongoing efforts to confront challenges facing women and girls. He spoke about improving access to justice for survivors of gender-based violence by closing legal loopholes, strengthening laws, and ensuring better implementation. President Ramaphosa stressed that gender-based violence is a human rights issue – not just a women’s issue – and called on men to be allies, advocates, and changemakers in their communities. The SANCB is honoured to support this global platform for judicial leaders and experts to engage on such an urgent and vital topic. #SANCB #MeetInSouthAfrica #HomeOfG20 #ReKaofela

South Africa is home to top thought leaders and industry experts, and it is part of the SANCB’s mandate to connect international events with local speakers and talent. At the 17th Biennial Conference of the IAWJ today, Justice Leona Valerie Theron of the South African Constitutional Court extended a warm and proudly South African welcome to judges, magistrates, and delegates from all corners of the world. Mandisa Muriel Lindelwa Maya, Chief Justice of the Republic of South Africa, emphasised in her opening address how proud we are to host this important conference in our beautiful country for the first time in IAWJ history. Gender-based violence remains a critical issue in South Africa. By bringing together a diverse group of magistrates, judges, and experts, we look forward to sharing knowledge in our collective pursuit to protect the rights of women and children across the world. #SANCB #MeetInSouthAfrica #HomeOfG20 #ReKaofela
