Tracking the European Roller: Advancing Conservation Through Science The European Roller undertakes an extraordinary annual migration of over 10,000 kilometres, travelling from Europe to southern Africa and back between November and April. Although globally listed as Least Concern, the European Roller population has been in steady decline since the 1970s, with local and national extinctions recorded across parts of Europe. In southern Africa, the species is regionally listed as Near Threatened, reflecting growing concern about its long-term survival. In response to these trends, BirdLife South Africa, supported by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, launched a long-term monitoring project to better understand the factors driving the species' decline and to identify conservation actions that could support its recovery. With additional support from the Royal Malewane Conservation and Research Centre, satellite tracking was introduced as a key part of this broader initiative to gather detailed insights into the species’ migratory behaviour. The first successful tagging of European Rollers in South Africa took place in 2024, marking a significant milestone. In 2025, the dedicated team, led by Jessica Wilmot, returned to the field and successfully deployed three additional tracking devices. Understanding how and where these birds migrate is crucial to conserving the species throughout their entire lifecycle. With accurate data on their migration routes, stopover sites, and travel timing, BirdLife South Africa can collaborate more effectively with international conservation organisations to create a safer migratory passage for these remarkable long-distance travellers - promoting coordinated conservation action across borders. Please note - each bird was fitted with a lightweight satellite tracker by a highly experienced wildlife veterinarian and trained bird ringer.
