About us
Manganese Metal Company, ‘Creating Strength’ for over 50 years. A key player in the global Mn sphere, MMC has risen to the top of the ‘Ore To Manganese’ supply structure, and more notably, has been recognized as the world’s largest refinery of 99.9% Selenium Free Electrolytic Manganese Metal (EMM). Our latest project, High Purity Manganese Sulphate Monohydrate (HP MSM), is in an advanced planning phase. The chemical processes have been exhilarating, as the global race to meet supply and demand for the Lithium-ion battery industry, is on. We will provide ongoing updates as our project progresses from confirmed laboratory success to us breaking ground for the construction of our Brownfield processing plant. Our dedication to maintaining a diminutive footprint on the beautiful lands of Mbombela has always been a non-negotiable for us. We aim to minimize waste, focus on sustainability awareness, lower carbon emissions, and steer ourselves towards an eco-friendly infrastructure. We are a proudly South African Company, motivated by our people and its history, with our sights set firmly on growing our presence on an international platform.

This week, three of MMC’s shareholders— Bernard Swanepoel, Anton Taljaard, and Clinton Halsey —along with the Exco team, took a strategic walk-through of MMC Mbombela, where construction of our new High Purity Manganese Sulphate Monohydrate (HPMSM) plant is well underway. This visit marks a pivotal moment as we continue expanding beyond our core operations and positioning MMC as an ex.China, leader in critical battery materials. For those new to what’s happening beyond our day-to-day operations, MMC isn’t just the only supplier of electrolytic manganese metal (EMM) outside of China- or the world’s largest refinery of 99.9% selenium-free EMM. We are also rapidly advancing in the battery materials sector with our brownfield HPMSM project. With the demand for manganese in lithium-ion batteries surging, MMC has developed two proprietary methods to produce High Purity Manganese Sulphate Monohydrate (HPMSM): 🔹 Ore to Crystal (OTX): A sustainable, low-carbon approach that refines manganese ore into HPMSM crystals. 🔹 Metal to Crystal (MTX): A fast-to-market process that leverages our existing HP EMM production to meet the near-term global demand for diversified battery material sources. The 6,000-tonne per annum MTX HPMSM plant under construction in Mbombela is set to begin production in H1 2026, marking a significant milestone in MMC’s strategic expansion and reinforcing our position in the evolving battery materials landscape. Exciting times lie ahead, and we are proud to be at the forefront of driving innovation, sustainability, and global competitiveness in manganese refining. Stay tuned! #MMC #Manganese #BatteryMaterials #HPMSM #SustainableGrowth #criticalmaterial

Being the only producer of Manganese Metal outside China comes with challenges—one of them being where to find top-tier talent for such a chemically complex process. Our solution? We develop our own. In 2019, Manganese Metal Company (Pty) Ltd launched a 'Process Learnership Program', giving unemployed youth from our local communities their first career break. The minimum requirement was a Matriculation with Math and Science, and no prior work experience was necessary. The candidates underwent rigorous training in: Health & Safety Process Flows & Operations Maintenance Best Practices Several graduates earned permanent roles within MMC, proving that opportunity fuels excellence. Last month, we celebrated Buyile M., one of our program’s success stories, on her promotion to First Line management. She now leads a team, ensuring operational efficiency and workplace safety. Join us in congratulating Buyile on this milestone! Her journey is a testament to what’s possible when companies invest in local talent. #MMC #Leadership #Manganese #WorkplaceSafety #SkillsDevelopment #Community #Students

At this year’s Mining Indaba in Cape Town, Bernard Swanepoel addressed a crucial topic: Beneficiation—the process of adding value to raw minerals before export. But the big question remains: Whose responsibility is it to drive this forward? Should the mining industry take the lead? Is it up to the government to create the right policies and incentives? What role should investors and manufacturers play in ensuring local value creation? In his conversation, Bernard unpacked the challenges and opportunities surrounding beneficiation in South Africa, highlighting the need for collaboration, policy alignment, and long-term commitment to creating sustainable growth. Watch the video and share your thoughts: How do we strike the right balance in driving beneficiation forward? - Investing in African Mining Indaba #MiningIndaba #Beneficiation #SouthAfrica #Mining #EconomicGrowth #MMC #Manganese
