The Nedbank and ECDC International Trade Seminar, held on 10 April 2025 at the Invest SA One Stop Shop in East London, tackled the evolving global trade landscape under the theme “Navigating Trade War Turbulence – Alternative Mitigation Strategies for South African Exporters.” The seminar brought together industry leaders and subject experts to unpack the complexities of the international landscape and explore practical solutions for navigating volatility. The programme opened with welcome remarks by Linda Lubengu from the ECDC and Siphamandla Ndlovu from Nedbank, setting the tone for an insightful engagement. Crystal Huntley, Nedbank Specialist Economist, shared a sharp economic overview, highlighting key trends shaping the trade environment, followed by Andrew Mackay, Nedbank Senior Dealer in Foreign Exchange and Money Markets, who unpacked the role of hedging instruments in mitigating exposure to risk, while Carolyn Louis, Nedbank Strategic Sales Manager, delved into various payment strategies and trade instruments in global trade. The keynote address by renowned trade specialist and market research advisor, Martin Cameron, Managing Director Trade DSM, provided strategic insight into how exporters can remain competitive amid ongoing global uncertainty. The ECDC Trade Promotion Programme is designed to empower Eastern Cape exporters with the essential tools, knowledge and instruments needed to overcome export challenges and thrive in international markets. The Eastern Cape Development Corporation (ECDC) and the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, through the Red Location Art Gallery and the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum, recently announced the winners of the 2025 LITHUBA LAKHO: THIS IS YOUR CHANCE exhibition and competition. This year, the competition broadened its scope to celebrate both visual art and craft, recognising exceptional talent from artists living and working in the Eastern Cape. Prizes were awarded in both categories, with first-place winners receiving R15,000, second place R10,000, and third place R5,000. Visual Art Category Winners: • First Prize: Ulahleko by Sive Ntombana (acrylic and oil on canvas) • Second Prize: Out of Africa by Mxolisi Dolla Sapeta (acrylic on canvas) • Third Prize: Two Souls Unite by Marlene Liebenburg (resin composite) Craft Category Winners: • First Prize: Beaded Waistcoat by Thandile Woji (beads, buttons, and zip) • Second Prize: Dembe by Lookout Sibanda (ceramic) • Third Prize: Wedding/Traditional Dress by Nosipho Metele (textile) In addition to the prize-winners, several artists have been shortlisted and will be featured in the official exhibition catalogue.
