Erick Calitz of MEDSCHEME HOLDINGS attended The Pharmacy Show last month where he joined an impressive panel of experts to discuss “The Future of Community Pharmacy: Opportunities and Challenges”. The panel delved into key trends and predictions on the role of AI in pharmacy, evolving patient needs and the growing importance of community pharmacy. Erick shared how MEDSCHEME is tackling these challenges by establishing a value-based care model which integrates pharmacy practice as part of a multidisciplinary team in managing chronic diseases to drive improved health outcomes and leveraging digital technology’s crucial role in facilitating coordinated care within the healthcare ecosystem. Thanks to Jackie Maimin and Ahmed Bayat, both from Independent Community Pharmacy Association, for the invitation. SAACP Pretoria Branch #thepharmacyshow2025

Managing chronic illnesses can take a significant toll on individuals both physically and mentally. Pharmacy Direct, an AfroCentric Group company is committed to delivering Value-Based-Care, designing their services with real-life patient barriers in mind, offering innovative solutions such as courier pharmacy deliveries, virtual counselling and multilingual education to ensure seamless chronic illness management.
Most discussions in chronic healthcare focus on costs, systems, and following processes. But if you ask the patient, the pain isn’t just physical—it’s emotional, logistical, and deeply personal.

World Health Day As we commemorate World Health Day 2025, we are reminded of the importance of maternal and newborn health, making efforts to end preventable maternal and newborn deaths as well as prioritising women’s health. Maternal health is crucial for ensuring healthy pregnancies, reducing the risk of infant mortality, morbidity as well as promoting overall wellbeing of both mother and child. The statistics are alarming: • In 2020, 24 120 perinatal deaths (15 908 stillbirths and 8 212 early neonatal deaths) were registered. • In 2022, 993 deaths during pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium (DDPCP) were reported to the National Committee for the Confidential Enquires into Maternal Deaths (NCCEMD) These staggering numbers underscore the urgent need for improved healthcare services for both mother and child. AfroCentric Group has been dedicated to improving maternal and newborn health through its partnership with Eluthandweni Maternity Clinic since 2015. This collaboration has allowed the group to invest in quality healthcare, ensuring equitable access to healthcare services for both mother and child. #WorldHealthDay #MaternalHealth #NewbornHealthnder!

AfroCentric Group’s Wellness Week! The AfroCentric Group's Wellness Team celebrated Wellness Week in style by bringing essential screening services directly to the workplace across all our branches, including Durban, Roodepoort, Vereeniging, The Boulevard in Cape Town and the Roodepoort Head Office. As part of our commitment to fostering a culture of wellness, this initiative ensured that our employees had easy access to proactive healthcare solutions. Whilst we encourage regular health check-ups, we believe preventive screenings are more important as they allow for the early detection of potential health concerns. Throughout the last 2 days, our employees took advantage of the health screenings, including: • Dental check-ups to support and maintain oral health • Optical assessments to ensure clear and optimal vision • Hearing evaluations for the early detection of any hearing concerns • Blood screenings to monitor key health indicators • Mammogram evaluations for proactive breast health management At AfroCentric, providing access to quality healthcare is at the heart of what we do, we believe that a healthy workforce is a more engaged, productive and thrives, we encourage everyone to continue doing so every day. #WellnessWeek #EmployeeWellness #AfroCentricCares

Medscheme's Year-End Automation Success MEDSCHEME HOLDINGS, an AfroCentric Group company, has achieved a very high level of claims automation, exceeding 99% for associated provider claims and close to 70% for facility claims. At year-end, Medical Schemes amend existing benefits and limits, which need to be loaded and tested to ensure that claims with service dates from 1 January pay accurately and promptly. These changes require approval from the Council for Medical Schemes. Any delays in obtaining the approved scheme changes would require us to place claims on hold and only process them once loading and testing is completed. Imagine the negative impact on member services, real-time pharmacy claims and healthcare provider debtor days if this were to be the case. Understanding the need to ensure that timely (and real-time) processing of claims is not impacted, the Medscheme HyperAutomation team, together with AfroTech and Cogent, set about automating the loading of rule changes as well as the end-to-end testing cycle. The automation was thoroughly tested and allowed us to fast-track loading and testing as soon as the changes were received, ensuring that we met the 1 January deadline. An exceptional achievement given the very tight timelines provided for the past year-end cycle. This success aligns with AfroCentric Group’s Vision 2030, which focuses on investing in data, digital platforms and technology to drive seamless, client-centric healthcare solutions. By leveraging digital innovation, we continue to enhance operational efficiencies, improve member experience and provide sustainable healthcare solutions for all Africans.
