Carers Rights Day

Did you know that Thursday November 21st 2024 is Carers Rights Day?

Every day, 12,000 people become unpaid carers for a partner, family member or a friend – many of whom don’t see themselves as carers, often unaware of their legal rights and what they’re entitled to in terms of support and benefits.

This year’s theme is ‘recognising your rights’ – and our aim is to help carers recognise and understand their rights, and to access the support available to them, whenever they need it.

As a carer, knowing your rights empowers you with information about what you’re entitled to. This helps you feel confident asking for what you need, as well as challenging things when your rights are not being met – whether that be in the workplace or education, in accessing health or social care, or when interacting with other professionals or at home.

I support an end to care charging

Non residential social care charges are putting many supported people and unpaid carers at risk of poverty.

We are asking for an end to care charging in Scotland

I pledge that no carer should live in poverty

Around 100,000 unpaid carers in Scotland are currently living in poverty. No carer should find themselves in poverty because of their caring role.

I pledge that no carer should have to give up work to care

Without the right support in place, 300,000 people give up paid employment every year in Scotland because they are no longer able to juggle work commitments alongside their caring role at home.

No carer should have to give up work to care.

I support a right to breaks from caring

Only 31% of carers in Scotland report that they feel supported to continue with their caring role.

All carers should have a right to a break from caring.

I support secure and improved funding for local carers centres and young carer services

Local carers centres across Scotland provide vital services for carers. However, without better and secure funding from local and national Government, many will be unable to support the increase in demand for their services.
