Using historical and
contemporary
research
Unit 9
Contextual References
a research into
historical and
contemporary work,
showing understanding of
the contexts which
influenced the work .
What have you learned about
the influences on other’s work?
B recording and
presenting information
explaining the use of
visual language in others’
work. Where have you
analysed examples? What did
you learn?
c use of contextual
references in own work
How have you used
references? What impact did
they have on your ideas?
• A) My research started with
Quintin Blake, Andre Derain and
the art I saw at the Tate Britain. I
used their techniques to
represent my own location.
Blake’s influence can been seen
throughout this project and in
my final piece.
• B) With the work on display at
the Tate I look in detail at one
particular piece, Hockney’s a
bigger splash. I looked at the
colouring, composition and the
emotion that is being shown on
through the painting. I found this
very helpful when doing my test
piece and eventually my final
piece.
• C) Once I chose my brief I looked
at a range of artists. From Bacon
to Hockney to Setrano. This gave
my a variety of ideas that I could
explore further.
Illustrate (photo’s from sketchbook) and fully explain one example for each criteria. Explain how you have covered the criteria.
Location studies
All Pathways- Fine Art,
Design, Multimedia
a. recording of experiences
or information to develop
intentions
What approaches did you use
to examine and record your
location? Representing the
space; details; light etc. How
did you decide and which
worked the best? Why?
b use of materials,
processes and technology
or a combination of
materials, processes and
technology to develop
ideas
What did you learn through
your initial enquiries?
Experiments and techniques,
use of an experimental process
to generate new ideas,
suitability of some rather than
others?
a) The first thing I did was
observational drawing, this gave
me a better understanding for my
location. I started by working in
pencil then moved onto colour
illustration using coloured crayons
and coloured fine liner pen. These
drawings worked as a really good
starting point because they are
accurate due to the fact that they
were drawn from observation. All
the work that followed this used
these initial drawings in some
capacity.
b) The materials I used
throughout the project were:
pencil, acrylic and water colour
paint, black ink and fine line,
coloured fine liner, crayon. Using
all these materials was good
because it lead me to a very
creative final piece that
incorporated multiple elements
that I previously used (a mix of
paint and pen).
Illustrate (photo’s from sketchbook) and fully explain one example for each criteria. Explain how you have covered the criteria.
Making and
developmental work -
(Test piece, studies from 3D
model)
Unit 12 (Fine Art)
a. recording of experiences
or information to develop
intentions
What approaches did you use to
examine and record your
location? Representing the
space; details; light etc. How did
you decide and which worked
the best? Why?
b use of materials,
processes and technology or
a combination of materials,
processes and technology to
develop ideas
What did you learn through your
initial enquiries? Experiments
and techniques, use of an
experimental process to
generate new ideas, suitability
of some rather than others?
a) I made a model of my location
as well as a virtual model of it on
Google Sketch Up. The model is
made from black card really
helped with my composition of
my test piece and my final piece.
When shining a spotlight on my
model it created really nice
shadows, I like how it looks in
photographs.
b) I experimented with materials
in very early on the project. They
let me show my location in very
interesting ways. However I
always wanted to do my final
piece in paint so it didn’t
influence my brief.
Illustrate (photo’s from sketchbook) and fully explain one example for each criteria. Explain how you have covered the criteria.
Unit 11 Develop & Produce
Own Ideas
a) Create and develop ideas in
response to the brief.
How did you interpret your
brief? What different
approaches to the same theme
did you explore? What
decisions did you make to
refine your ideas?
b) Plan and produce final
outcome using specialist
working methods and
processes.
How did you decide on the final
outcome? Why was this the
best approach? How did you
choose the techniques you’ve
used? Did they work
effectively?
Developing your
personal brief
a) My final piece is a painting, I did
this because my main inspirations
were the artwork displayed in the
Tate Britain (like the pieces from
Hockney and Bacon). My brief told
me to produce a piece of art that
is suitable for display in the Tate
and reflects my location in Esher
College.
b) I included brown paper to make
for a more interesting surface for
my final piece because when going
through the ‘development brief
sheet’ half way through the
project I said I wanted to add a
collage element to my work, I tried
this in my prototype and it worked
so well I used it in my final piece.
Illustrate (photo’s from sketchbook) and fully explain one example for each criteria. Explain how you have covered the criteria.

What impact did they have on your ideas? • A) My research started with Quintin Blake, Andre Derain and the art I saw at the Tate Britain. I used their techniques to represent my own location. Blake’s influence can been seen throughout this project and in my final piece. • B) With the work on display at the Tate I look in detail at one particular piece, Hockney’s a bigger splash. I looked at the colouring, composition and the emotion that is being shown on through the painting. I found this very helpful when doing my test piece and eventually my final piece. • C) Once I chose my brief I looked at a range of artists. From Bacon to Hockney to Setrano. This gave my a variety of ideas that I could explore further. Illustrate (photo’s from sketchbook) and fully explain one example for each criteria. Explain how you have covered the criteria.
  • 3. Location studies All Pathways- Fine Art, Design, Multimedia a. recording of experiences or information to develop intentions What approaches did you use to examine and record your location? Representing the space; details; light etc. How did you decide and which worked the best? Why? b use of materials, processes and technology or a combination of materials, processes and technology to develop ideas What did you learn through your initial enquiries? Experiments and techniques, use of an experimental process to generate new ideas, suitability of some rather than others? a) The first thing I did was observational drawing, this gave me a better understanding for my location. I started by working in pencil then moved onto colour illustration using coloured crayons and coloured fine liner pen. These drawings worked as a really good starting point because they are accurate due to the fact that they were drawn from observation. All the work that followed this used these initial drawings in some capacity. b) The materials I used throughout the project were: pencil, acrylic and water colour paint, black ink and fine line, coloured fine liner, crayon. Using all these materials was good because it lead me to a very creative final piece that incorporated multiple elements that I previously used (a mix of paint and pen). Illustrate (photo’s from sketchbook) and fully explain one example for each criteria. Explain how you have covered the criteria.
  • 4. Making and developmental work - (Test piece, studies from 3D model) Unit 12 (Fine Art) a. recording of experiences or information to develop intentions What approaches did you use to examine and record your location? Representing the space; details; light etc. How did you decide and which worked the best? Why? b use of materials, processes and technology or a combination of materials, processes and technology to develop ideas What did you learn through your initial enquiries? Experiments and techniques, use of an experimental process to generate new ideas, suitability of some rather than others? a) I made a model of my location as well as a virtual model of it on Google Sketch Up. The model is made from black card really helped with my composition of my test piece and my final piece. When shining a spotlight on my model it created really nice shadows, I like how it looks in photographs. b) I experimented with materials in very early on the project. They let me show my location in very interesting ways. However I always wanted to do my final piece in paint so it didn’t influence my brief. Illustrate (photo’s from sketchbook) and fully explain one example for each criteria. Explain how you have covered the criteria.
  • 5. Unit 11 Develop & Produce Own Ideas a) Create and develop ideas in response to the brief. How did you interpret your brief? What different approaches to the same theme did you explore? What decisions did you make to refine your ideas? b) Plan and produce final outcome using specialist working methods and processes. How did you decide on the final outcome? Why was this the best approach? How did you choose the techniques you’ve used? Did they work effectively? Developing your personal brief a) My final piece is a painting, I did this because my main inspirations were the artwork displayed in the Tate Britain (like the pieces from Hockney and Bacon). My brief told me to produce a piece of art that is suitable for display in the Tate and reflects my location in Esher College. b) I included brown paper to make for a more interesting surface for my final piece because when going through the ‘development brief sheet’ half way through the project I said I wanted to add a collage element to my work, I tried this in my prototype and it worked so well I used it in my final piece. Illustrate (photo’s from sketchbook) and fully explain one example for each criteria. Explain how you have covered the criteria.
