👨👩👧👦 UCalgary Law Caregiver Group Coaching - Winter Series Wrap Up 👩👩👧👧
This semester, I wrapped up the second group coaching series with law student caregivers, across all programs (FTLP, JD, LLM).
🔦 There were two standout moments for me:
🧹 The first was the session we had on invisible labour and the mental load. This discussion was one of the most rich, respectful and eye-opening group coaching sessions I’ve witnessed. We had different genders in the space as well as folks with different cultural lenses, and the group didn’t shy away from getting into it all. They heard each others’ plights and feelings of frustration, and were able to walk away with a newfound sense of understanding of what their partner’s may be going through, because of this exploration.
👩⚖️ The other moment was when we had a lawyer join us to talk about her journey as a mother and a lawyer. We started this session off with the students witnessing me coach her one-on-one, and then we brought all the voices into the space to ask questions and reflect on what her journey could mean to them. I was nervous about this session because I wanted it to remain coaching and not simply listening to a guest speaker… I’m pleased to say because of the lawyer’s incredible openness and introspection, and the students receptiveness to the coaching process, that this particular session added great value to the series.
But what did the participants think? In their own words:
“Madeleines group coaching sessions for parents in the law school provided invaluable encouragement, unity, and connection.”
“The caregiver coaching sessions were honestly amazing! It was so refreshing to connect with others who just get it, who can totally relate to the unique challenges of juggling caregiving, academics and career! It was like a breath of fresh air, a non-judgmental and safe space. I always looked forward to the bi-weekly sessions.”
“Madeleine is very graceful in navigating these challenging topics; it was particularly valuable to me to hear the perspectives of both male and female caregivers. For example, I sometimes take a defensive stance (which I internalize) when my partner shares her grievances; hearing similar issues from the women in the group helped me to understand that my wife's issues are "for" her or us, not "at" me.”
“Group coaching gave me the rare opportunity to pause and process what I was going through—personally and professionally… I left each session feeling more grounded, connected, and capable of handling the demands of law school with a bit more compassion for myself.”
"Impactful - I came to the sessions looking for "tips", but I left with a renewed confidence in myself and the knowledge that I'm not alone."
I am looking forward to continuing to support all UCalgary Faculty of Law in this capacity in 2025/2026!
