Environmental justice is here to stay, says Brittany Bolen during a panel discussion on plastics at the American Chemistry Council's #GlobalChem conference. Bolen, former administrator for the #EPA's Office of Policy and partner with Sidley Austin LLP said even though the current administration is dismantling the EPA's EJ program many states are still requiring some form of EJ permitting and decision making. "It's here to stay by all counts regardless of executive orders," she said. #environmentaljustice, #EPA, #chemicals

In this episode, Trish Kerin and Traci Purdum discuss two major BP incidents: the 2005 Texas City Refinery explosion that killed 15 workers when an overfilled tower created a geyser of hot raffinate that ignited, and the 2010 Deepwater Horizon explosion that killed 11 workers and caused the largest U.S. marine oil spill when cement failed to properly seal a well. Key factors included faulty equipment, misleading indicators, inappropriate safety messaging and failure to learn from near-misses. How will #tariffs impact your business? #Chemical manufacturers are facing significant uncertainty as President #Trump's new tariff policies take effect. Industry organizations like SOCMA warn of higher feedstock costs and supply chain disruptions, particularly for specialty chemicals that rely on raw materials unavailable at scale domestically. Some companies like Covestro and Moeve are taking a wait-and-see approach. European chemical groups through Cefic have pushed back, calling the tariffs "unjustified" and warning they act as hidden taxes on consumers. Meanwhile, the American Chemistry Council notes the critical role of trade for U.S. chemical competitiveness, with the sector posting a $28 billion trade surplus in 2024. Interestingly, some U.S.-based suppliers see opportunity. Domestic #biomanufacturers like Locus Fermentation Solutions anticipate a market shift toward prioritizing U.S.-sourced materials, potentially strengthening their value proposition and supply chain resilience. TfS has worked to standardize the PCF guideline with other industrial frameworks, such as the WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development's PACT Framework, the auto industry’s Catena-X and the Global Battery Alliance.
