Your Mind - The Control Tower

Your Mind - The Control Tower

Many times when working with my coaching clients or training participants they push back on the notion that we have personal power --more importantly that we have the power to choose. And that our choices determine the direction of our lives.

It’s not so much that they see themselves as victims; victims of circumstance, of their environment, bad things that happen to them etc. One client said to me, “you make it sound easy, you have no idea what I’m up against”. However, I believe that we choose who we want to be and how we want to be. That doesn’t mean it’s easy or that it’s done without intentional thought and action – but we can build and have the lives that we want to live. We choose.

On Sundays, whether I attend church or not I always listen to Rev Charles Stanley. Today he spoke about how we can take control of our thoughts. He said, “Our thoughts affect our perception of other people, God, our situations, and ourselves. They (thoughts) determine the direction of our lives, the quality of our relationships, and even our accomplishments or failures. Although we can’t control people or all our circumstances, we can choose what to think about them, which in turn direct how we respond.” He put forth two themes; one on thoughts and consequences and the other on options that we have with regards to what to do with a thought when it comes into our minds.

#1 “Although no one else knows our thoughts, they are eventually revealed in our faces, our actions, and ultimately in our destinies:

  • We sow a thought and reap an action.
  • We sow an action and reap a habit.
  • We sow a habit and reap a character.
  • We sow a character and

#2 “When a thought comes into our minds, we have several options regarding what to do with it:

  • Accept the thought and express it in some manner.
  • Wrestle with it for a while.
  • Deny it.
  • Control it.”

Dr. Stanley also offered what I consider some great Coaching Questions -- impactful questions designed to evaluate our thoughts. The last four are questions that I would add to his list:

  • Where does this thought come from?
  • Where will these thoughts lead me?
  • Will these thoughts get me where I want to go?
  • Are these thoughts scripturally acceptable?
  • Will these thoughts build me up or tear me down?
  • Could I share these thoughts with someone else?
  • Where did these thoughts originate?
  • Do these thoughts make me feel guilty?
  • Do these thoughts show me as a follower of Jesus? (God, Allah, Buddha or whomever we believe is our higher power)
  • Does this thought add value (to me, to others)?
  • Will this thought hold me back from pursuing my dreams and aspirations?
  • Is this thought healthy for me (physically, mentally, emotionally or spiritually)?
  • Will this thought hurt me or someone else?

World-renowned leadership expert, John Maxwell; in his recent book Good Leaders Ask Great Questions, talks about the value of questions. Maxwell encourages us to embrace asking questions as a lifestyle. One reason is this, “If you want answers, you must ask questions”.

When I talk about not giving up our personal power, again Maxwell supports this when he suggest that asking questions is a great way of preventing mental laziness and moving ourselves out of ruts. He says, “Life is a journey, one in which we seek to find our way and make a difference. Questions help us to make that journey”.

My ponderings about the importance of questions from a Coaches perspective is best captured by Martin Luther King who said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’”
