Why We Mask Up

Crippling Economy & Covid-19 Spread Inspires Nevada Creators to Take Action

Tired of watching people they care about lose their jobs while more and more people get sick, these diverse content creators living in Las Vegas and Reno decided to team up and do something about it! A small community collective including Elizabeth "Izzy" Thorn, Elias Benjelloun, Sofia Monroe launched “Why We Mask Up” - an awareness campaign to fight the spread of the virus and take personal responsibility while promoting professional, educational, and emergency resources. The social campaign aims to highlight local community members from all backgrounds donning masks stating who they mask up for, and their personal why. The goal is to inspire others to do the same by bringing humanity and empathy to the forefront and reminding each other why it's important to wear a mask.

#WhyWeMaskUp social media campaign includes:

  • A podcast series interviewing local community members asking why they choose to wear a mask.
  • Videos of local influencers and their personal reason for masking up and following covid-19 guidelines.
  • #WhyWeMaskUp is inviting local creatives to submit their art for a mask. The campaign’s intention is to cultivate opportunities to support artists.
  • #WhyWeMaskUp is inviting local music creatives to submit their song about why they mask up or to participate in this community collaboration.
  • It’s hard enough to get ahead, now there’s a pandemic. So, WhyWeMaskUp.com includes a list of resources to help our fellow community members.

Why We Mask Up fundraising storefront:

  • The storefront at whywemaskup.com is accepting custom orders for “We Mask Up For X” for example “We Mask Up For Grandma” or “We Mask Up For Jobs.”
  • The proceeds get donated to a local nonprofit based on participating nonprofits and customer checkouts.
  • The store is currently live with a mask supporting The Just One Project, one of Southern Nevada’s largest nonprofits bringing groceries into food insecure neighborhoods .

Thank you for reading this. We look forward to collaborating and hearing from our community to get involved.
