What's User Flows?

User flows are essentially roadmaps that depict how users navigate through a product, typically an app or website. They visually represent the steps a user takes to complete a specific task, from start to finish.

Here's a breakdown of the key points about user flows:

  • Visualization tool: User flows are created as diagrams or charts, and can be fairly simple or quite complex depending on the product and the task being mapped.
  • Focus on user goals: They illustrate the user's journey through the product, keeping the user's needs and the most efficient way to achieve them at the center.
  • Benefits: By understanding how users interact with a product, user flows help improve the overall user experience (UX) by ensuring a smooth and intuitive process.

There are different types of user flows, but some common ones include:

  • Basic user flows: These map out the happy path scenario, where the user completes the task successfully without encountering any obstacles.
  • Alternative user flows: These account for different user choices or actions, showing how the user flow might branch out depending on the user's decisions.
  • Error flows: These illustrate what happens if a user makes a mistake or encounters an issue, such as an error message.

Overall, user flows are a valuable tool for UX designers and product managers to optimize the user experience and ensure users can achieve their goals easily and efficiently.
