What's the biggest misconception about business analysis?

Is it just about writing down what people say they want? While capturing requirements is crucial, business analysts wear many hats! We act as translators, ensuring clear communication between business and technology. We're also problem solvers, identifying gaps and recommending solutions that meet strategic goals.

Here are some common misconceptions I've heard:

  • BAs are only needed for IT projects. False! Our skills are valuable across departments, from product development to marketing.
  • Anyone can be a BA. While good communication is essential, effective BAs possess a unique blend of business acumen, analytical thinking, and stakeholder management expertise.
  • BAs document what they're told. We actively challenge assumptions, ask probing questions, and ensure requirements are not just feasible but also aligned with the bigger picture.

What are some misconceptions YOU've encountered about BA work?
