What is the problem I am trying to solve? Look at the ants and you understand it

These days a common question you always find when one talks about startups is:

“What is the problem you are trying to solve?’. It seems a magic formula:

Any time you find the solution you are there, you might get funding and you are going to be successful.

But is that right?

I will explain my thoughts with an example.

This summer I stayed at a beautiful and very clean place close to the beach for few days.

However my room was very hot at night. I was unable to sleep.

One night I went to the dining room and I was surprised.

Close to the window, in the corner, I saw a lot of ants coming out of the wall. Big ants.

I was immediately concerned with what to do.

Do I look for pesticides? But I hate their smell and besides they are not good for the environment.

Do I try to kill them with a broom?

Why do I have to kill those ants? They did not do any harm to me.

Do I have to pull the table away from the wall? What else might I do?

While I was trying to find the solution I decide to open the window because it was hot.

But when the fresh wind came from the window the ants started running away and disappeared immediately. They did not like the cold wind coming from outside.

The solution was just under my eyes but I was unable to find it.

I do not know exactly why it worked. I guess ants do not like cold winds. But that does not matter. It worked and the same solution worked for the other nights too. I solved the problem and the solution was quick and easy.

Sometime we come up with some strange ideas about how to solve a problem. We have many contrasting thoughts, lots of discussions about what would work and what would not.

We push our ideas and products.

But the solution is right there. You just have to observe what happens and adopt an easy solution. Most of the times that would work far better than any solution you might come up with after long discussions.

Startups should behave the same way if they want to succeed.

Look at how the ants (ie the market) behave and react before coming up with complicated solutions to the problems you are trying to solve.
