🆕 What's New This Week 🆕
CoreWeave’s big month continued, as the AI cloud infrastructure startup raised another large debt round — this one a $7.5 billion facility from the likes of Blackstone, Magnetar and Coatue — in the same month it raised a $1.1 billion venture round.
Big rounds continued as Vercel locked up a $250 million Series E led by Accel. The company, which allows companies to develop web applications in the cloud, is now valued at $3.25 billion, a 30% uptick from its most recent raise in 2021.
Speaking of huge valuation jumps, Weka, a Campbell, California-based startup data platform, more than doubled its valuation with a $140 million Series E. It is just the latest big round for an AI infrastructure company.
CyberArk began the week with a bang — buying machine identity company Venafi for $1.5 billion. The deal is the largest this year for a private cybersecurity company.
Wednesday saw a couple of big generative AI deals, this time to translation and language startup DeepL, which nabbed $300 million at a $2 billion post-money valuation, and $125 million for generative AI music startup Suno.
Two AI startups raised huge rounds on Tuesday. Scale AI raised $1 billion in a round led by Accel that values the San Francisco-based data labeling and evaluation startup at a stunning $13.8 billion. It marks just the latest huge valuation jump by a startup in the sector. In addition, Paris-based artificial intelligence startup H, previously referred to as Holistic AI, launched with a $220 million round.
Two deals to U.S.-based startups last week hit a quarter-of-a-billion dollars or more and there were eight rounds of $100 million-plus. Biotech made up nearly a third of the list, while some other sectors that don’t usually make the list — developer platform and analytics — were represented.
📈 Emerging Trends 📈
Despite some truly massive deals — including $1 billion to a company using AI for drug development — global startup investment in April was basically flat. The biggest deal of the month also exemplified the two sectors that have been leading venture investment in recent months: AI, and healthcare and biotech, which together captured some 43% of total startup investment in April.

This month has brought big AI rounds and valuation jumps back to the forefront and shown that investors are still willing to say yes to a deal no matter the cost.
U.S. venture investors have mostly closed the door on smart-home and smart-building investments, with less than $100 million going to such companies so far this year. But while investment is down, it hasn’t dried up entirely.
What better way to forecast the state of venture funding than to ask the people writing the checks? That’s what Kauffman Fellows did in its first venture sentiment survey. Among other things, 53% of respondents said they expect funding to pick up this year — but also for the bar to be higher for those startups looking to raise.
🛠️ Startup Strategy 🛠️
When creating your own SaaS company, you need to understand the distinctions between vertical and horizontal approaches, and make deliberate efforts to choose the best path forward. The choices you make, such as technology type, B2B vs B2C focus, and vertical vs horizontal orientation, will significantly impact product design, market strategy, financials, and fundraising potential. The vertical SaaS model is seen as requiring less capital, making it attractive to some venture capitalists, while horizontal SaaS companies have a larger addressable market and potential for higher valuations upon exit. Key metrics like sales and marketing budgets and EBITDA margins also vary between the two approaches.
An estimated 50% of startups don’t survive to the five-year mark. What can entrepreneurs do to increase their companies’ chances of long-term success? Lakshmi Shenoy, CEO of Tampa-based startup hub Embarc Collective, shares some of her best advice gleaned from working closely with many companies who’ve defied the odds.
💡 Expert Insights 💡
To keep up with innovations in AI and related fields, the U.S. must encourage the brightest minds from around the world to bring their talents to the country. Sasha Ramani, head of corporate strategy for MPower Financing, explains how the U.S. government and universities can help.
What if we lowered the bar for people to create high-quality, socially valuable content, and used LLMs to serve that to people? Guest author Philippe Boutros considers how generative AI could actually make the internet better, not worse, if we use it thoughtfully.
