Cyber related Updates{Part-1} {Events are dated between Feb 1, 2022- Feb 14, 2022}

1) A lawsuit has been initiated by Texas Attorney General, Ken Paxto against Facebook’s parent company Meta Platforms Inc. for violating the state’s privacy protection in terms of facial recognition technology. The company has almost captured facial geometry in snaps that people have uploaded from 2010 to till date & using it for its own corporate benefit.  

2) The US Senators introduced the Heath Data use & Privacy Commission Act which aims in initiating the process of modernizing the use of health data & privacy policies. This move was important as HIPPA was introduced somewhere around 25 years back & that only focuses on the patient-doctor interaction but doesn’t cover heath data and patient records on those tools. Several health organizations have welcomed the bill.

3) The National Cyber Security Centre (UK), Australian Cyber Security Centre, Federal Bureau of Investigation (US) along with Cyber Security & Infrastructure Security Agency (US) joins hands to reveal latest trends of ransom ware. They urged the businesses to take protective measures in order to ensure safety. The NCSC launched the Ransomeware Hub where advice on ransomware is provided.

4) Macy Inc. is relying on radio frequency identification technology to protect their asset from theft. These RFID chips will provide the retailer information of where & when the products are being stolen. It’s a great way of investigation of their products. This step is taken after the high profile cases at stores have happened that includes brands like Louis Vuitton.

5) The Israeli Government is all set to establish a commission of inquiry to examine the reports submitted by the Police in regard to the spyware developed by NSO Group to hack the phones of Israeli public figures without authorization. NSO Group was that firm only which developed hacking software, Pegasus.

6) The FEBRABAN - Brazilian Federation of Banks has approved the SARB 25 regulation which establishes the regulations & guidelines to be adopted by financial institution to strengthen the protection of customers’ personal data under the ambit of GDPL (General Data Protection Law).

7) A very great initiative of using electronic surveillance has been used by Japan for its citizens suffering from Dementia. The motto behind is to protect citizens who are enrolled in electronic surveillance by tracking their movements. The concerns of privacy overreaches & informed consent have been raised.

8) In India, the JPC has recommended to cover personal as well as non-personal data, along with the proposed change in the name of PDP (Personal Data Protection Bill) as DPA (Data Protection Act). Apart from it, the tiered cap to recruit Data Protection Officer is yet in question for the business & organization.

9) In Greece, the Hellenic Data Protection Authority has fined OTE & Cosmote 3.25M Euros & 6M Euros respectively for their roles in data breach. It was found that customer call data stored on Cosmote Server was moved to an IP Address of a hosting provider in Lithuania. The investigation further revealed an OTE website was hacked from the same IP address by a user.
