Are we measuring performance? Single points of data can mislead
I'm interested in measuring performance against strategic goals at this moment in my career and taking time to brush up on my knowledge. This article pricked my interest because I am a BBC devotee when it comes to news and sport. I have also gone through the classic curve from R1 to R2 to R4 to rediscovering R1 because my daughter puts it on when she's home. I long ago gave up on R2 beacuse I prefer talk to music.
Do the BBC want to lose 1.3m listeners to R2? If they do nothing then they will lose them to death if not to other innovators. Did Ken Bruce take his listeners with him? Maybe, but it is also likely that they just went somewhere else. I am sure that R2 will not be too concerned with the short term. They will look at the trends against previous experience with an overlay of the macro trends on where people are moving to fill their ears in the mid mornings. No doubt Vernon and his producers will experiment and get the core following that they will settle on.
In LeTCI analysis we need to be looking at Trends as well as Levels. How does our performance Compare to our experience, our goals and other performance markers (has another show taken our viewers or have they been lost to daytime live radio?)?
Finally we need to know how Important the measurement is to our overall strategic goals. Maybe they just wanted to move more listeners to the very excellent other shows on their network? Maybe that is the measure of success?
I encourage you to apply LeTCI. Look it up.
