The war in Gaza, an opportunity for eliminating “Avoidable Blindness”?! A Note to the Global Eye Health Community

For decades now, themes like justice, rights, equity, inclusion, universality of access, and the notion of “leaving no one behind”, have been the global eye health community’s bread and butter.

But as the horrific crimes and atrocities in Gaza keep taking place and live streamed nonstop across all media platforms, I find myself questioning the very fundamental tenets and themes, around which the global eye health movement has been built and embraced, for the past 50 years or so. The irony is that for the past 47 days, Gaza has turned into a blind spot, for an international community in which clarity of vision has always been its ultimate concern. I’ve hardly seen anybody uttering justice, rights, equity, inclusion, or universality of access, and I’ve seen an utter disregard to the notion of “leaving no one behind”.

As eliminating “Avoidable Blindness” has been center-stage in our community’s advocacy efforts -for all-, I invite everyone in the global eye health community not to turn a blind eye on what’s happening -before their very eyes- to well over 2 Million fellow human beings; because this is a blindness that is avoidable and eliminable, too…
