UX Vs. UI Design Straightening Out the Confusion
The evolution of web design is a convoluted path that has taken a turn into more of an analytical, left-brain approach. As a result, there is a lot of confusion between User Experience design and User Interface Design. And often the terms are confused as well.
Essentially, UI design is visual and brand-oriented, related to the "look and feel" of a site—this is where visual designers, graphic designers, art directors, and creative directors shine. It is not an area that is quantifiable: it is more pure visual design. Good designers design according to intuition (grounded in years of experience), not through analysis. UI design is married to branding through words and images, and thus this role is especially important at the beginning of the establishment of the brand. Later on, once the brand's specs are decided (colors, images, typography), the creative director and design team have to make sure that all subsequent pages/projects—whether online or not—adhere to the established standards and carry the same "look and feel" and language through all communications.
User Experience design is more analytical and left-brain. Their work has to be quantifiable because it is based on statistics and reports of test subjects using the app or site.
UX and UI designers are usually members of a larger team. Below is a pretty good definition of the various roles and duties of each:*
