Separation Anxiety: How the Dutch see the United States, and the implications for Dutch foreign policy

The race between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris remains very tight. This Clingendael survey looks at Dutch views of US politics and the transatlantic security and economic relationship. Below a few remarkable results:

  • 74% of the Dutch say they are somewhat or very pessimistic about US democracy
  • A majority expects the US elections to lead to societal unrest (72%)
  • 61% believe that the US will be less influential on the international stage in twenty 20 years’ time. This is a view shared by both progressives and conservatives

Clingendael US Programme officially launched in Hotel New York!

In this research program, Clingendael focuses on the changes in, and implications for, our relationship with the United States. The first research is the results of the latest Foreign Affairs Barometer, which were presented in Hotel New York.

Public event in the library of Breda

In addition, the Clingendael organised an event at the Nieuwe Veste library in Breda. Rem Korteweg presented the new data after which a lively discussion took place on Dutch perceptions of US politics. Didi Spelbos , former intern at Clingendael and the Dutch embassy in Washington D.C., reflected on sentiment among young Americans about the election and Europe.

The US elections and the future of NATO: A scenario analysis

As the consequences resulting from the US presidential elections on the Alliance and on European security may be very different, it is hard to draw a clear conclusion before 5 November or even early 2025 when the new President will enter the White House. Depicting a set of possible scenarios might help to gain more insight on the impact of the 2024 US elections. Dick Zandee and Roman de Baedts explore four scenarios:

  • Scenario 1 – Better burden-sharing
  • Scenario 2 – Transactional security
  • Scenario 3 – Partial US disengagement
  • Scenario 4 – US leaving NATO
