Understanding the essence of corporate "Stratecution"

“A goal without a plan is just a wish.”

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, French writer and pilot

Intro

I have grown in my consulting career switching from deal advisory into corporate strategy (EMS: Enterprise Model & Strategy) in early 2023, embarking on an interesting journey of corporate "stratecution".

Defining "Stratecution"

Corporate strategy in my eyes is the art of planning and directing a company to achieve set aims. The diversity of goals and their intertwining nature make it complex and sometimes hard to follow through.

Drafting a strategy book is only half of the journey. We need to also ensure proper implementation or execution in order for a strategy to serve its purpose - help companies reach their goals.

I have been deriving simple yet highly effective golden rules that help me stay on top of the game creating best-fit strategy design and implementation for my clients.

My 5 golden rules for a successful "stratecution"

  • Goal setting shall be measurable, ambitious and honest - wishful thinking might get in the way on setting realistic objectives and achieving them gradually. Scenario-based planning is one of my favourite exercises to go through as you see how people in an organization think in terms of risk willingness and trusting into their company's core assets.
  • Strategic planning includes setting clear priorities, assigning proper accountabilities and breaking goals into stages and subsets of tasks as well as mapping all dependencies carefully really help to avoid setbacks along the way. Also think about escalation mechanisms in advance to make sure any issue along the way can be solved timely.
  • Execution requires dedication and commitment of all key stakeholders. Consultants would then track progress and flag the wins and losses, leveraging existing corporate structures and network to facilitate successful implementation.
  • "Stratecution" loop: a good strategy functions in a loop. Once one goal is reached, we measure the results, serving as input material for setting further goals, maximizing assets short-,mid- and long-term.
  • Good strategy vs. great strategy: A good strategy might come with consultant's skills, but a truly great strategy's essence always reflects company's people who put their sweat and soul into the company and their cultural heritage.

Our goal as consultants is to enable C-level to put their vision into action and jointly watch company's fruits ripening and the company flourish in the long run.
