Understanding Common Misperceptions in Cloud Terminology: Cloud Migration vs. Cloud Transformation
The terms "Cloud Migration" and "Cloud Transformation" are often used interchangeably in discussions about cloud strategies, yet they refer to distinct processes with different scopes, goals, and outcomes. Here I attempt to clarify the differences between these terms and dispel common misperceptions surrounding them.
Cloud Migration
Definition and Scope: Cloud Migration involves moving workloads and data from legacy, on-premises environments into the cloud. This process focuses on modernising the underlying technology stack without fundamentally changing the systems or related business processes.
Key Characteristics:
Objectives and Outcomes: Cloud Migration seeks to move workloads from legacy hosting environments into the cloud, removing the need to support the infrastructure layer of the technology stack. It places the burden of managing the data centre environment and facilities and the physical infrastructure hosted within it on the cloud service provider. Depending on the services chosen, maintenance activities and risks across the infrastructure, OS and application stacks are managed by the provider, offsetting the management burden for the client organisation.
However, Cloud Migration does not necessarily aim to transform the business, operations, or IT processes that rely on those systems. It focuses on technological upgrades and IT modernisation rather than altering business models or operational strategies.
Cloud Transformation
Definition and Scope: Cloud Transformation goes beyond moving workloads into the cloud, and aims to transform applications into Cloud native services, optimising the benefits and value delivered by cloud services. True Cloud Transformation involves business, IT and organisation-wide transformation to create a more agile, efficient, innovative, and customer-centric organisation, fully leveraging cloud technologies, modernising IT infrastructure and processes to improve operational efficiency, drive cost savings, enhance customer experience, and increase competitive advantage. It involves re-architecting and re-engineering the software and infrastructure stacks aligned to a modern enterprise architecture and is often combined with elements of Digital Transformation to modernise business processes and enhance overall business operations.

Objectives and Outcomes: Cloud Transformation aims to fundamentally change the systems and processes associated with business applications. It requires collaboration between business, IT and supporting operational teams to achieve true transformation. The objectives of Cloud Transformation include enhancing the pace and success of value delivery, adopting agile methodologies to deliver value incrementally and frequently, and modernising IT integration across the business.
Cloud Transformation leverages Software as a Service (SaaS), providing the entire application stack as a cloud-based service. SaaS products are fully managed by the service provider and come ready to use, including all updates, bug fixes, and maintenance, which simplifies access and usage for customers.

Final Thoughts
Both Cloud Migration and Cloud Transformation play crucial roles in an organisation's cloud strategy. Each has distinct goals and outcomes but can be complementary when integrated effectively. Cloud Migration provides immediate benefits by modernising infrastructure and mitigating risks, while Cloud Transformation offers long-term advantages by fundamentally changing how the business operates and delivers value.
The scale of change required to achieve full Cloud Transformation should not be underestimated. Executives must recognise that Cloud Migration alone will not necessarily reduce IT service costs or improve business-IT integration. Understanding the differences between these processes allows executives to better articulate a roadmap for their business, driving towards a more efficient, value-centric, customer-led, and competitive organisation.
