Transferring Knowledge

A Tech Solution

Continuing the discussion from the previous issue on knowledge transfer, I had the opportunity this month to sit down with Paul C. the founder of On3 . Full disclosure, I have been working with Paul and his team for a couple of years now creating content for On3's knowledge management platform for the residential construction industry. Specifically, I helped create the newly released safety training modules on the platform. More about that later.

The On3 platform is a mobile first knowledge management platform. It is currently aimed at the residential construction market with some large industry players on board using the platform to inform, teach, and share information across their operations.

Check out the video below for a glimpse at the On3 platforms features. You can also watch the recording of the livestream on LinkedIn to catch all the details and discussions.

One of things that makes the On3 platform different is that it is mobile first and aimed at transferring knowledge to construction industry workers where they work… in the field. The other differentiator is On3 Create, which allows users to use the camera on their phone to quickly take videos in the field, which the system's AI then turns into professional tutorials that can be shared throughout the company. This ability to capture and share knowledge fits right in with my theme of knowledge transfer this month!

Take Aways

  • The residential construction industry is in dire need of a training platform that reaches out to the people in the field that directly influence the production and quality of our housing supply. A platform like On3 facilitates this through a combination of professionally produced, prebuilt modules, combined with the ability to leverage AI in the field to create company specific training that helps ensure standards and instructions are known company wide.
  • Speaking of prebuilt modules, let’s get back to that safety training! I have recently posted about fall protection in construction continuing to be the most frequently cited violation and the biggest contributor to fatalities in the industry. I have also posted some photos and videos that illustrate some of the issues. The industry must work to correct this! We spent a great deal of time and effort to do our part and created some excellent training modules for managers, crew leaders, and trades people. One of the issues plaguing employers has always been the challenge of training our diverse workforce in a language they understand. With On3's AI capabilities, this ends now. Modules are available in multiple languages with new languages being added in the near future. Each user can simply switch to their language in the app to receive the training in a language they understand.

What’s Coming Up

To transfer knowledge, we need to continue efforts to be more collaborative and make information more readily available across our teams. It’s no coincidence that the companies you see me partner with all enable this in some way. One of the first courses I created on LinkedIn Learning was a course on the widely used Bluebeam Revu platform, which was quickly followed up by a course on Bluebeam for the iPad. Bluebeam users already know about the built it collaboration capabilities in Bluebeam Studio, but one of the things I noticed when I was researching the iPad app is that it also seamlessly integrated with several other cloud storage platforms to allow easy retrieval and sharing of information. One of those platforms is Progress ShareFile , which bills itself as an inherently secure file sharing platform with some new features built specifically for the AEC community. I will be interviewing Beau Weiss from ShareFile on December 5th, on the Livestream version of Thoughts from the Field. Make sure to join us live so you can ask questions and learn about the built-in construction industry templates. Additional Resources for Construction Management Professionals

If you are on LinkedIn Learning and haven't seen the new professional certificate programs that are being offered, you should go take a look! This page lists all the professional certificate offerings (with new programs in the works), along with cert prep exams and continuing education partnerships. Many of our construction management courses are accredited for CEU's by the Project Management Institute. I am excited to announce that one of the latest offerings on LinkedIn Learning is the Construction Management Professional Certificate, sponsored by LinkedIn and Procore Technologies. Earn the certificate by completing 9 courses and passing a final exam. If you have been watching my courses on LinkedIn Learning, you may already have some of these requirements completed! Check it out by clicking on the image below.

From this article (about challenges that are similar in many industries and sectors): New talent will need to be attracted and retained, while knowledge will need to be transferred from the existing and departing talent. Organizations should use both methods of knowledge transfer (personalization and codification) to support their workforce, using as many means as possible, both formally and informally. Organizations should also add knowledge transfer to their list of must-have skills when recruiting new talent, evaluating the performance of existing talent, and engaging contractors and consultants. https://ktproject.ca/canadas-oil-gas-workforce-will-need-more-than-talent/
