Tracking the Tariffs?

Tracking the Tariffs?

Wondering how tariffs might affect you? Let’s talk about it—from a Human Resources perspective.

No politics. No deep dive into business strategy. Just a straight look at what tariffs can mean for people—especially those of us navigating the workforce.

Whether you're in manufacturing, tech, or services, tariffs can hit like an economic curveball. And in many ways, the ripple effects look a lot like what we see during recessions or other periods of uncertainty.

📉 From the HR lens, here’s what often follows:

Hiring freezes or layoffs

Training budgets slashed—or redirected to upskilling

Restructuring: supply chains, org charts, or even office locations

Salary stagnation or benefits adjustments

Shifts in talent retention or attrition

Increased outsourcing

But here's the real question: What can you do when times get tough?

🎯 Focus on what’s in your control:

✅ Upskill or reskill—independently or via internal resources

✅ Seek internal mobility—promotions, relocations, cross-functional roles

✅ Prioritize mental health—resilience is your secret weapon

✅ Consider side gigs (if allowed)—freelancing, consulting, or building a personal brand

✅ Explore new sectors—diversify your career options

💬 I’ve navigated my fair share of challenges—recessions, COVID, international relocations, an expired work permit, a layoff, a difficult pregnancy, and health struggles.

It hasn’t been easy, but each challenge has played a role in shaping my growth—personally and professionally. As the saying goes: “When the going gets tough, the tough get going.” And I truly believe that—with the right mindset, support, and a willingness to grow—we can come out stronger on the other side.

The strategies above helped me stay adaptable—and grow, even during uncertainty.

How are you preparing for workforce shifts like these? Let’s share ideas. 👇
