Top 3 Most Hated Versions of Windows
Yes, Windows is the most used operating system in the world, and yes, it has been great for the most part, but there were some versions that we were better off without ever getting to use them. So what are these big mistakes that Microsoft made? Find out below.
Before we begin, a little explanation on how this list was created. It is not about the functionality or lack thereof, but the general “hate” and dissatisfaction with the product, it’s about how hard it was to use these versions of Windows, how drivers did not work, how many of those epic BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death) screens we have seen… Some of these were so bad that people started making jokes about them, and you will read some below, so let us begin this awful journey.
3. Windows ME
I actually tried using this piece of, well, garbage, and of course failed, not because I do not know how to use a computer, but because freezing and restarting every few hours is just not a pleasant user experience. All those people voting for Windows 8 or Vista have no clue what they are talking about. Sure they are bad, but ME is in a league of its own. The reason why Vista and Windows get more votes is that more people have tried them. ME was Microsoft‘s shortest lived OS ever, with a lifespan of only 1 year. It is the only OS that has not been fixed and had no service packs. Microsoft gave up on this OS as there was no way to fix it. Their official fix was buying XP. Most traces of this OS ever existing have been hidden byMicrosoft, it is just that bad. I’ve tried playing games on it, they crashed, I’ve tried using my printer, it crashed. It was just unusable! You should try to install it on a virtual machine just for fun. It had a nice wallpaper though.
2. Windows Vista
Well, the “wounds” are still fresh with this one. Vista was, in a way, a modern version of Windows ME. The company was at a crossroads again, creating and almost finishing Windows Longhorn, which was never released, and then, after just one year, they shipped this Vista thing they called a new and beautiful OS. It did, at the time, look good and modern with the Aero interface, but was way too demanding for the PC. Most users needed to buy new computers, and they could not get the cheap ones, even if they just wanted to use it for word processing and some web browsing, the Aero interface was so demanding they had to spend at least 500$ to run the thing. And after they paid for this OS, they were greeted with non-existing drivers, frequent BSODs and just a complete failure of the system. I remember installing it and using it for 10 days, then it would suddenly crash and I would have to reinstall the whole system over and over again. But it’s not all bad, after the first Service Pack, things got much better, and after the Secondthings got rather good. But, by then, everyone hated the thing so it became rather frequent in computer jokes.
1. Windows 8 RT
How this thing came to be is beyond me, I can just imagine someone at Microsoft saying: “Let’s useWindows 8, remove all the desktop applications that people love and use, and put it on tablets”. I can not understand why this thing exists. Most people dislike Windows 8, and the only thing that they do like is the desktop mode that runs all their favourite apps and games, and they removed that! How, Microsoft, just how and why? Of course, they wanted to compete with Apple in the tablet space, but they just did not know what they were doing with this one. If Windows 8 was already optimized for touch input devices, why create this? The ARM CPU architecture was their answer, so that it can work with those CPUs, and have a longer battery life, but selling an OS without any apps is just a waste of time. Of course, nobody bought these tablets, and manufacturers started using the full Windows 8 in their devices.
And that wraps up our list. If you want, you can install some of these operating systems in virtual machines and have some fun, but just do not ever install them as your main OS, but learn from the mistakes of others instead, and let’s hope that Microsoft does the same.
