The project is expected to employ approximately 250 people during the construction phase, and around 300 people during operations. Local jobs will be created in construction, transport and supply of goods and services.

Stanmore Coal intends to limit the project’s environmental footprint by using the company’s existing coal processing plant and rail infrastructure, which links the mine to the Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal.

The company has prepared an environmental impact statement (EIS) and is currently assessing its response to public submissions. Mining lease applications and an environmental authority application to enable development of the project have been submitted.

Subject to all required approvals, construction and mining operations are expected to start in 2021.

7. San Gabriel project

Mine Name: San Gabriel project

Commodity: Gold and Silver mine

Location: Moquegua Region, Peru

Owner/Operator: Compañía de Minas Buenaventura

One of five projects with a total investment of £2.56 billion that are due to start in July 2021, the San Gabriel project – 100 percent owned by Compañía de Minas Buenaventura, a Peruvian precious metals producer – is an underground gold and silver mining project.

Located in the District of Ichuña, in the Province of General Sánchez Cerro, Region of Moquegua, the project is expected to process some 3,000t/d of ore. The company is currently optimising the project, having recently submitted a Sustainable Technical Report to the Senace environmental certification service for sustainable investments.

It says that it intends to optimise the process plant by improving metallurgical recovery, making more efficient use of its equipment and infrastructure, and relocating the area for thickening and filtering tailings, among other objectives. It also plans to use solar energy on the project and have a ‘much more electric mine’.

6. Grassy Mountain Coal project

Mine Name: Grassy Mountain Coal project

Commodity: Open pit coal mine

Location: Alberta, Canada

Owner/Operator: Benga Mining, a subsidiary of Riversdale Resources

The Grassy Mountain Coal Project is a proposed steelmaking coal mine that will developed on a legacy mining area, 7kms north from Blairmore in the Crowsnest Pass, Alberta, Canada. The project is projected to produce around 93 million tonnes of product coal over its 23-year mine life. It is currently being reviewed by provincial and federal regulators.

Owned by Benga Mining, a subsidiary of Riversdale Resources, the Australian mining company, the Grassy Mountain Coal Project is an open-pit coal mine that is projected to bring in much-needed foreign investment to the Canadian economy, along with the creation of hundreds of jobs in Alberta – should it go ahead.

Plans for the project are for a 2,800-hectare open pit mine developed at an approximate cost of £529 million. It is intended to produce up to 4.5 million tonnes of coal per year over a 25-year lifespan.

5. Los Filos expansion

Mine Name: Los Filos expansion

Commodity: Gold mine

Location: Guerrero State, Mexico

Owner/Operator: Equinox Gold

Although facing a blockade from members of the nearby Carrizalillo community, production is expected to restart soon on the 193,000oz/ year Los Filos gold mine, including expansion plans for the open pit mine in Guerrero State, Mexico.

The Los Filos expansion project includes the enlarging of the current open pit, addition of a new open pit, development of a second underground mine, and the construction of a new carbon-in-leach plant to complement the existing heap leach facilities, owner Equinox Gold says.

Engineering and optimisation studies related to the CIL plant will be completed in early 2021, after which the company expects to provide an update on its plans to increase the plant’s size and costs to construct it. It will then seek approval from the board of directors to begin construction.

4. Abujar Gold project

Mine Name: Abujar Gold project

Type: Gold mine

Location: Côte d’Ivoire

Owner/Operator: Tietto Minerals

Tietto Minerals recently received approval from the Côte d’Ivoire’s Ministry of Mines, Petroleum and Energy for a mining license for its 3.02Moz Abujar Gold Project, paving the way for development of West Africa’s next gold mine (click here).

The company says its systemic exploration over the 70kms strike of the Abujar Project’s three tenements has identified three mineralised gold corridors – the West Corridor, Central Corridor and East Corridor.

In total, the company has defined 33 gold prospects to date, including 20 gold prospects inside the mining license with gold resource upside to realise through ongoing diamond drilling.

Systematic drilling is underway to test the new prospects identified to date and it is planned to use six Company‐owned diamond drill rigs to complete this exploration drilling by Q3 2021, Tietto says.

3. KoBold Metals project

Mine Name: KoBold Metals project

Commodity: Cobalt mine

Location: Quebec, Canada

KoBold Metals is a start-up backed by a group of tycoons, including Bill Gates, which plans to use data-crunching algorithms to search for cobalt near a Canadian nickel mine owned by Glencore.

The company has acquired rights to an area of approximately 1,000sqkms – roughly the size of New York City – in northern Quebec. The San Francisco Bay Area-based mineral explorations company aims to use machine learning and other scientific computing techniques to increase the ethical supply of critical materials needed to build electric vehicles and personal electronics.

The start-up hopes to use data analytics to build a ‘Google Maps for the Earth’s crust’, betting that it can find metals – such as cobalt, nickel, copper and lithium – that have thus far been out of reach to more traditionally minded geologists.

2. Khoemacau Copper project

Mine Name: Khoemacau Copper project
