How to Relax on a Monday: A Guide to Starting Your Week Stress-Free

Mondays can be a tough transition from the restful weekend to a new workweek. When compounded by the holiday season, the added stress of planning, shopping, and preparing can feel overwhelming. Here's how to relax on a Monday while managing holiday stress.

1. Start with a Grounding Morning Routine

Take control of your Monday by setting the tone with a peaceful morning.

  • Wake up early to avoid rushing.
  • Practice mindfulness with 5–10 minutes of deep breathing or meditation.
  • Enjoy a healthy breakfast and a hot drink, savoring the moment rather than multitasking.

2. Prioritize Your To-Do List

Start with a list of tasks, both personal and work-related.

  • Identify priorities and focus on just 1–3 essential tasks for the day.
  • Leave non-urgent items for later in the week.
  • Give yourself permission to delegate or say “no” to avoid burnout.

3. Take Holiday Stress One Step at a Time

The holidays can feel like an endless stream of demands, from buying gifts to hosting events. Break it down:

  • Create a holiday calendar to organize tasks and deadlines.
  • Opt for batch shopping or use online services to reduce time spent in crowded stores.
  • Set realistic expectations—remember, the holidays don’t have to be perfect to be meaningful.

4. Combat Overwhelm with Mini Breaks

Whether you're working, holiday planning, or running errands, take intentional pauses:

  • Step outside for a short walk.
  • Stretch or do light exercises to relieve physical tension.
  • Listen to calming music or a favorite podcast.

5. Practice Gratitude

Focusing on gratitude can help shift your mindset during stressful moments.

  • Write down 3–5 things you’re grateful for, no matter how small.
  • Reflect on the joy the holidays bring, such as connecting with loved ones or enjoying traditions.

6. Wind Down Your Monday with Self-Care

End your day on a calm note:

  • Enjoy a hot bath or shower to relax your muscles.
  • Disconnect from screens at least an hour before bedtime.
  • Read, journal, or engage in a relaxing hobby to clear your mind.

Remember: It’s Okay to Take a Step Back

It’s normal to feel overwhelmed during the holidays, especially on a busy Monday. Be kind to yourself and recognize that you can’t do it all. By embracing small moments of relaxation and staying organized, you can make your Mondays—and the holiday season—less stressful and more joyful.

Take a deep breath, tackle your tasks one at a time, and don’t forget to celebrate the progress you’re making. You’ve got this!
