The Story of 'Hammy' The Rescue Dog
It all started with a text message from my Sister “This is going to sound crazy…” and ended with a number of volunteers helping an abandon dog to travel over 1,600 miles from Texas to New Jersey in order to get to his Forever Home.
This is a story of Hammy, a Dalmatian and Staffordshire Terrier mix who was found chained to a post outside of a vacant rental property and left for dead. It is also the story of an online community and a lot of caring people coming together to help this special dog get another chance at life.
Hammy was abandon in June and was discovered by the property owner who just happened to be a dog-lover, and also a member of an online forum where parents share information on raising babies and small children. After hitting dead ends with trying to find a local shelter or rescue to take him in she decided to post on the forum to see if anyone could help.
My Sister saw the post and agreed to adopt the dog if they could figure out the logistics, but Hammy was halfway across the United States. Another contributor on the forum said “we can relay him there” and the wheels started turning! Numerous volunteers stepped up to help transport and foster the once-discarded pup. Someone created a spreadsheet to track and coordinate everything, and others even donated money to offset the expenses.
Hammy helped his cause with his non-stop positive attitude, playfulness, and willingness to meet a lot of new people. This made it difficult to not want to contribute to his journey. When I picked him up for my leg of the relay you would have thought that we were old friends who had been reunited... although the handful of dog treats probably did not hurt things.
In the end 14 volunteers (and some additional helpers) drove and fostered Hammy over the course of eight days across 10 states and he is now safely at home with his new family. Along the way he even managed to land a cameo in a Texas newspaper and on a Virginia television station.
This story is a great reminder that there are good people out there, and that the right attitude can take a very bad situation and potentially offer new opportunity (at least from Hammy’s perspective).
Thank you to all who made this possible. Perhaps this story will prompt others to give back, or if they find themselves in a ‘Hammy situation’ to stay positive and look for different ways to find help.
