Stop Doubting and Start Believing in Yourself

Stop Doubting and Start Believing in Yourself

Today, I’m writing about something that affects so many of us—self-doubt. We often spend so much time wrestling with these feelings, especially when it comes to our careers. But what if we shifted our focus? What if, instead of dwelling on our insecurities, we embraced the power of self-belief?

The Power of Self-Belief

I want to share a bit about my own experience transitioning from a career in news to coaching and entrepreneurship. Let me be honest: it’s been anything but easy. There have been moments—tough days—when I found myself questioning whether I should go back to a job in news and what do I really know about being a business owner. Those types of thoughts can creep in so quickly and make you doubt every step you've taken.

But here’s the thing: I’ve learned to catch myself before going down the rabbit hole and flip the script. Throughout this transition, self-belief has become my anchor. It’s the only thing that keeps me moving forward despite the challenges. When I remind myself of who I am, my strengths and why I chose this path, I find the courage to push through those rough patches.

Why Self-Belief Matters

When we underestimate ourselves, we often miss out on opportunities that could improve and advance our careers. I know someone who was being considered for a main show news anchor role, but he didn't believe he was ready, so his news director chose another candidate. Self-belief is not just a feel-good mantra; it’s a critical factor that can dramatically influence your professional trajectory. Here’s how:

Confidence: Believing in yourself gives you the confidence to take risks and step out of your comfort zone. Whether it’s applying for a new position or pitching an idea, confidence can open doors.

Resilience: Challenges are inevitable in any career path. However, self-belief helps you bounce back from setbacks and view them as learning experiences rather than failures.

Authenticity: When you believe in yourself, you’re more likely to show up authentically at work. This authenticity can foster stronger and more genuine relationships based on respect.

Steps to Cultivate Self-Belief

Never underestimate how believing in yourself can profoundly impact your career. Here are some ways you can shift the focus on self-doubt to self-belief:

Celebrate Small Wins: Take time to acknowledge your achievements, no matter how small they may seem. Each win is a steppingstone towards greater confidence.

Surround Yourself with Positivity: Engage with people who uplift you and encourage your growth. Their belief in you can reinforce your own.

Challenge Negative Thoughts: When self-doubt creeps in, challenge those thoughts by reflecting on past successes along with your strengths.

Set Realistic Goals: Break larger goals into manageable steps that allow for gradual achievement and reinforce your sense of capability.

Look, believing in yourself doesn’t mean ignoring areas for improvement; rather, it means recognizing that you are capable of growth and success despite any perceived limitations.

Final Thoughts

You have unique talents and perspectives that deserve recognition—not just from others but from yourself too! So next time you find yourself caught up in self-doubt, take a moment to reflect on your journey. Celebrate how far you've come and remember that believing in yourself is not just an option; it's a must.

For me, there's no turning back. I won't return to a newsroom or news organization unless it's to provide coaching, consulting, or both. I've chosen to embrace my new chapter wholeheartedly and keep pushing ahead, no matter what obstacles get in my way. I can overcome them just as I have before.

If I can support you in believing in yourself, please reach out and let me know.

Wishing you all the best,

Renee
