So you need a job. But does the job need you?
Many job seekers tend to view the job search from their own lens. And it's understandable especially if you are facing redundancy or in the job market for other pressing reasons. You are preoccupied with landing that role - filled with a sense of urgency to get hired quickly - sometimes even getting frustrated because you are not receiving responses as quickly as you thought you would. It's a tough place to be in. For a few minutes, I invite you to step back and take a clarity break. Ask yourself the question - does the job need you?
Your ability to answer this question convincingly could be the difference between having an amazing job find you or continually searching & applying repeatedly with no success.
The job needing you not only means you get hired, it determines your ability to thrive when hired. Now, what does it mean for the job to need you?
It means:
- You know exactly what the job is – not just in generic terms, but you understand what the purpose of the job is in that specific industry (or even company). If you are looking for just any job, your job search will take a while.
- You understand the problems your prospective employer is hiring to solve – no one hires just to fill a seat – and you know what outcomes they need. You know how to deliver those outcomes & can either demonstrate that or show a track record that says you can.
- You understand the overall business context within which your prospective employer(s) operate (competition, market trends, customers, regulatory environment, current issues) and how your particular role contributes to achieving their business goals.
- You are familiar with their culture and have found alignment between your personal values and direction and theirs. You know how they work and are happy to join the team.
- Most of all, you are able to take all that understanding and present your self in a way that helps them recognize you as the person needed for that job.
When you are able to answer the question – ‘does the job need you?’ like this, chances are that the employer too can see that you are the person they need for the job.
Please take a little time and answer the question. Does the job need you?
