RF Boot Camp on Matching, System Models and GaN PAs with ADS Examples

Modelithics was honored to be invited to participate by delivering three tutorial presentations at an  "RF Boot Camp" workshop at IMS2015 this past May.   The presentation files PDF's along with ADS workspace examples can now all be downloaded from the Modelithics website links shown below the abstracts included here for each tutorial.  The treatment is intentionally focused on fundamentals or basics and we  welcome your feedback on whether you find this material useful   (email: info@Modelithics.com).

Impedance Matching Fundamentals - Theory and Simulation (Modelithics, Inc. and the University of South Florida): For RF and microwave circuit design impedance matching is fundamental to practical realization of all types of circuits including amplifiers, mixers, oscillators and antennas. This talk will outline various types of lumped and distributed matching network topologies and approaches. Understanding the basic theory is important. However realization of practical matching circuits in, for example a PCB environment, is best ultimately done using a modern circuit simulator. Several examples will be demonstrated using Keysight ADS for both lumped and distributed (microstrip transmission line elements) matching circuits.

Introduction to Simulation-Based GaN PA Design   (Modelithics, Inc. and the University of South Florida): Microwave power amplifiers have been a hot research and development topic for several years now. What keeps it interesting is a mix of new applications with challenging requirements combined with evolving technologies that have gone from Silicon to GaAs to GaN and back to Silicon over the years. We will be focused on understanding the basic principles behind non-linear power amplifier design and outline a simulation-based approach utilizing Keysight ADS, that starts with a non-linear GaN HEMT model and outlines a series of steps to accomplish a basic narrow-band PA Design that addresses stability considerations and is designed against a specific set of gain, power, efficiency and VSWR considerations. An ADS workspace with example simulation setups related to this tutorial will be provided to all attendees.

Understanding Basic RF Analog Receiver Design and Analysis (Modelithics, Inc. and the University of South Florida): Understanding the operational characteristics and functions of the various blocks that make up a typical microwave receiver is helpful for system designers, component designers as well as “system on a chip” IC designers. This tutorial will provide an overview of the independent and integrated functioning of the various system blocks comprising a typical heterodyne down converting receiver, including mixing, amplification, image frequency filtering and adjacent channel filtering. Demonstrations in Keysight ADS will be used to illustrate the impact of component specifications on overall sub-system performance as well as how advanced simulation models, including X-parameter-based amplifier models, and scalable attenuator and filter models can assist with sub-system design and optimization.
