Returning to Lead: Charlotte’s Path Back to Monex

At Monex, we believe in recognising and celebrating the incredible contributions of women in the workplace. This Women's History Month, we're shining a light on the remarkable women who help shape our company by sharing their inspiring stories and the impact they've made.  

Today, we're kicking things off with Charlotte Moakes , our Head of Risk in the London office, a true example of resilience, growth, and what it means to be a Boomerang Employee.

What is a Boomerang Employee? 

A Boomerang Employee is someone who leaves a company to explore new opportunities and later returns (just as their namesake), bringing fresh perspectives, enhanced skills, and greater industry knowledge. Boomerang Employees offer unique advantages: they reintegrate quickly, require less onboarding, and contribute from day one, all while applying what they've learned elsewhere.  

Charlotte’s journey is a perfect example of how sometimes coming back is the best move forward. 

From Monex to New Challenges - And Back Again 

Charlotte first joined Monex in 2017 as a Risk Manager, when the company looked very different to how it does today. After nearly five years of career growth under her belt, she was eager to expand her skill set and take on greater responsibility. With this ambition in mind, Charlotte decided to pursue an opportunity elsewhere. 

"It was time for me to step into something new that challenged me... My new role was at a start-up firm, completely different from Monex in every way. I was given the responsibility of starting their entire credit risk department from scratch, which was an amazing, but immense opportunity for me."

"Although I had not been looking to leave, it felt like the perfect time to push myself out of my comfort zone." 

Over the next 18 months, she developed policies, procedures, and a risk framework while hiring and leading a team of junior analysts. 

Returning to Lead  

After gaining invaluable leadership experience, Charlotte was presented with an opportunity to return to Monex - this time as Head of Risk.  

"I loved (and love) the idea of being able to learn from experts in their fields, and so this was a key factor in what attracted me back. Our team now has specialist functions in Treasury and Capital, and a very experienced CRO."  

"The move needs to be both right for the employee and the employer. But ultimately for me, it was not just right for my career progression - it was right for me personally. It was about coming back to a place that almost felt like home." 

Looking Ahead 

Now reporting directly to the Chief Risk Officer (CRO), Charlotte is focused on strengthening the Risk team and fostering a culture of growth and development. 

"I want to support the risk team in becoming valued members, helping them grow and advance in their careers - just like I have been lucky enough to do throughout mine. This has been an amazing opportunity to come back to a place where I have history and know the processes and people."

"However, I am now in a position to make a greater tangible impact using my career experience to date.” 

Words of Wisdom: Believe in yourself 

"It's crucial to prove yourself, but above all, trust in your own abilities. Maintaining perspective is a superpower - it helps you stay grounded, appreciate the bigger picture, navigate challenges with a balanced mindset, and focus on long-term goals."

"Lastly, it's important to recognise that being a 'career woman' doesn't define you, just as 'being a mother' doesn't. You can not only excel in both roles but find true fulfilment in both."

Charlotte’s story is a testament to the power of stepping outside your comfort zone and embracing new challenges. We’re proud to have her leading the charge at Monex and inspiring the next generation of female leaders.
