Reiki and a Life-Saving Treatment: New Study Shows How It Can Support Dialysis Patients
Hemodialysis is a life-saving treatment for patients with end-stage kidney disease, but it comes with burdens of chronic pain, fatigue, and persistent itching that negatively impact quality of life.
In response, researchers are increasingly turning to complementary therapies, such as Reiki, to find non-pharmacologic options for symptom relief. A recent randomized controlled trial provides new evidence for the efficacy of Reiki as a supportive measure in hemodialysis care.
Conducted across three dialysis centers in Turkey, researchers examined 37 participants receiving 10 sessions of Reiki (twice a week for 5 weeks) and compared them to a control group who received standard of care. The results were compelling:
These findings support the growing field of biofield therapies and how these practices could offer a safe, cost-effective, and effective approach to supporting conventional care. Especially for many dialysis patients, it could significantly improve how they feel during the process and their quality of life.
With exponentially growing interest in whole-person care, Reiki is leading the charge for biofield therapies - becoming less “alternative” and more integrative than ever before.
