Primary Mat Functions: Scraping and Wiping

Keeping a building's floors clean is certainly a daunting task, combining staff effort, the proper cleaning products, and carefully selected floor mats.

In order for matting to efficiently remove dirt and debris from shoes as people enter a building, two actions are required: scraping and wiping.

Scraper mats feature a bi-level design. There is some feature of the construction that creates a higher surface and a lower surface. You can browse our Scraper Mats on our online store.

Above is the Waterhog Entrance Mat, which illustrates this feature.

This surface provides a scraping edge that removes considerable debris from shoes as they pass over it. It also creates a lower surface where the particles are stored, keeping further traffic from bringing it all back in.

Wiper mats are flat and surfaced with a carpet material. Once inside, the majority of dirt has been removed, and what is left is a bit of moisture. The wiper mat offers a continuous surface for this additional drying and wiping to occur.

Our collection of wiper mats will give you a few examples.

Scraper/wiper mats fill in the spaces. Between a scraper mat and a wiper mat, which are solely suited to do their respective jobs, there is also a scraper/wiper mat that helps the transition move smoothly. These are mats that have a carpet-material surface, but also feature that bi-level construction. The image above is from a Waterhog mat that falls into this category. Many more mats in our store fulfill this purpose, and you can see them in our Scraper / Wiper Mat collection.
