Preconditions to Initiate Change

Preconditions to Initiate Change

Someone once said it is ok to visit pity city, but you’re not allowed to move there. I would like to share my insights and how this has transformed into a personal disruption at the time of great disruption not seen since the great depression.

Look back over the last two years, my life had a sharp turning point. You could say I hit rock bottom. We have all been there!

Reflecting on this over the last week I realise that "catastrophe" is what allowed me to turn my life around and create a renewed life I love living. The word that I focused on during this time was STABILITY. Something I keep coming back to and has allowed me to create a new foundation to thrive.

“We often wait for a catastrophe before we change. But a more intelligent way of approaching change is to focus on our own preconditions. In other words, what accelerates change for you?”  – Erik Kruger

The new world willing to change

In the last six months, I have seen similar change on an accelerated and global scale. Projects that usually took two years have happened in two weeks. As humans, we are amazingly adaptable creatures but do need precondition to change.

Here are ten areas I have come across in the last while:

  1. Catastrophe or hitting rock bottom
  2. Having the right people around you to enable accountability
  3. Self-trust and a belief in your why or just cause
  4. Focus (hyper-focus and scattered-focus)
  5. Creating the correct environment and culture around you
  6. Consistency and habit building (daily routine)
  7. Creating systems and structure to re-enforce change
  8. Pressure and timelines
  9. Financial stability
  10. Having the skills and resources to drive change

Each of these areas is amazing tools and need heightened understood on a deeper level.

The way forward to the new abnormal

The one that stands out in these turbulent times is a catastrophe and has been an amazing drive of growth. As we get back to the new abnormal do not discard the other tools. They all have the power to drive personal, team and organizational change!

 But remember:

“You can change immediately. But to sustain that change you must choose it over and over, day after day.” – Erik Kruger

I must give credit to Erik Kruger and his Think Week for providing the space to learn about these preconditions of change and challenging me to think deeper on this topic!

So, let me pose the question, what have the preconditions for change in your life been?

Hi Michael. Thx for sharing your compelling and insightful personal story of resilience - described by Webster dictionary "as ability to recover or adjust to misfortune or change" . As you alluded to in your piece, this is a must have personal capability to navigate the 'great disruption' we are all living through.
