PHILOSOPHY. By J Curry

PHILOSOPHY [Pt 1] (By Jimmy Spice Curry) Psychology is typically considered a medical science wherein practitioners study the human mind, behavior and related actions. Philosophy can also be expanded (depending on the school of thought) to include the study of nature (including homo sapiens sapiens, plants, animals, and the galaxies. Def. Philosophy is the utilization of the human mind (and proofs, truths, reasoning, etc) to identify the true nature of human knowledge, existence, goodness, and reality. The branches of philosophy are metaphysical philosophy, moral philosophy, natural philosophy. The Greek etymology is from the Greek word phi'losophi'a, ‘the love of wisdom'. Philosophy has three distinct subfields: Logic (the primary principles of correct (and incorrect) reasoning; Epistemology (What is knowledge, how do we confirm the accuracy of knowledge), and Metaphysics (which types of things exist and what are their essential components that make them real/exist.) "Value theory" can be broadly defined as is the aspects of all fields of philosophy (moral, feminist, black, African, Native American, political, social, aesthetics, etc) that focuses on what is determined as valuable in such areas of study/research/reflection. Natural philosophy (aka philosophy of nature) was the predominant study of nature and the physical universe before 1850. After the European/Anglo "Age of Enlightenment, natural philosophy had some changes in the subject areas studied. Social sciences came out of "Moral philosophy”. (The Age of Reason aka Age of Enlightenment was mostly funded by the wealth from European and American colonies, use of slave labor, genocide of Native Americans, 1st Nations, aboriginals, and expedited abuses of the environment (water, trees, air, etc) which we continue to see today. Much of this is ignored in traditional Western philosophy and business classes and mentioning it is taboo.)

Philosophy is one of the Humanities (an academic discipline), along with art, languages, literature, law, geography, history, politics, religion. Some of the world's most popular philosophers are: Imhotep, Confucious, Buddha, Yeshua (aka Iēsous, Jesus), Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Kant, Marx, Hume, Descartes, Locke, Aime' Ce'saire, Gu Su, Frantz Fanon, Martin Luther King, Wole Soyinka, W.E.B. Du Bois, Robert Brandom, Nana Asmu'u, Chanakya aka Kautilya, Spinoza, Simone de Beauvoir, Hypatia, Red Cloud (Mahpiya Luta), Sitting Bull, Hu'kesni, Chomsky, Kwame Anthony Appiah.

Schools of philosophical thought: Idealism (Ideas are the only things worth knowing; the only real reality) See Plato.

Realism: Realists (reality is the physical objects in our universe.) See: Aristotle. Pragmatism (aka Experientialism)Only things we observe for ourselves are real. (See Charles Sanders Peirce). Existentialism: (Physical world has no meaning outside the individual human's definition, experience of the world.)

(Personal reflections) Although some argue that philosophy rarely uses "empirical evidence" I think that as humans develop more understanding, our philosophies become less speculative and more accurate. Philosophy vs Psychology: Psychology is focused on the human mind and related behavior. Also research Perception and cognition.
