Optimizing Your Resume with AI
This guide will show you how to use an AI platform to improve your resume for specific job applications. While AI can be a helpful tool, it's important to remember that it should not replace your own judgment.
What you'll need:
· An AI platform like deepai.org, Gemini, or ChatGPT. JobScan is another option, operates like Grammarly – provides a score showing how ‘well’ your resume matches a job description
· Your resume
· The job posting you’d like to apply to or relevant company information (About Us or Culture Page)
Steps:
1. Choose your AI platform and prompt:
· Open your chosen AI platform and copy/paste the following prompt:
"Act as a prompt engineer, review the following prompt for me, optimize to make it better and ask me any questions you have before proceeding.
Take the below resume and rewrite to align the resume with the verbiage or common language used for the [position title you are applying to] at [company name]. Continue to ensure the resume format is optimized to get through applicant tracking systems and AI screeners."
2. Your resume and the company information:
· Paste your resume into the AI platform's text box
· Copy and paste the job posting, company's About Us page, or Culture Page (whichever seems most relevant). You can try each one to see what recommendations you get.
3. Run the prompt and answer AI questions:
· Press "Enter" to run the prompt. The AI should ask you clarifying questions – because that’s what we asked it to do.
· Copy these questions, paste them into the text box, and answer them to the best of your ability. Once complete - select “Enter”

4. Review the AI suggestions:
· The AI will provide suggestions to optimize your resume. Carefully review these recommendations
· If something seems wrong, be direct and ask the AI what you'd like changed and go through this until you are satisfied with the ‘preliminary’ results
5. FINAL STEP:
· Type "execute prompt" to finalize the process and select “Enter”
Important notes:
· Use AI as a tool for generating ideas and improving your resume's phrasing. Don't rely solely on AI-generated content
· Double-check all information provided by AI for accuracy
· Remember, the first 10-15 seconds of a recruiter's review are crucial. Make sure your resume's most important information is at the top – clear & concise
Additional tips:
· You can use this process for your entire resume or focus on specific sections like your objective and most recent position
· Consider customizing your entire resume for each job application, but prioritize the information most likely to be reviewed first
