ChatGPT became everyone’s biggest fan a few weeks ago – it was overly flattering and agreeable. Many people noticed it responded in ways that were overly supportive but disingenuous. OpenAI rolled back the small change that was intended to improve the model’s default personality.

With over 500 million people using ChatGPT every week, this change in personality from a small update brings up some new existential issues for work and personal life. At work, an AI model that agrees with you (and will lie to make you happy) can lead to bad code, costly decisions, and career-ending mistakes.

Outside of work, people are starting to use AI models to plan their schedule, make choices for them, and act as companions/guides. And it’s already turning catastrophic – with some people’s personal relationships (and mental health) being destroyed by AI-fueled spiritual fantasies.

AI-first companies and AI employees

Shopify and Duolingo both recently announced their AI-first approach and are firing contractors. Shopify’s CEO memo requires that employees prove new jobs can’t be done by AI before they ask for more headcount

AI agents were already making waves in 2025 before Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei claimed AI employees are a year away. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella just announced 30% of Microsoft’s code is written by AI and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg expects most of Meta’s code to be written by AI within 12-18 months

While these stances, claims, and estimations are obviously hyped up (lots of people already think Duolingo’s service is getting steadily worse),  AI-written code and Agent employees are starting to impact everyone.

And while the AI cycle unfolds, teams of software engineers and product people are busy solving big problems.
