New study from The Brookings Institute on Automation and AI

The report is an interesting study of the impact of Automation in the US rather than an in-depth look at what (office) Automation is. It is a policy document aimed towards governments and comes with a number of recommendations on how to adjust to Automation.

Automation and IA is not clearly defined, so can mean both automation in the work shop and in the office.

Nonetheless, and I might have lost 80% of RPA developers at this point, as we as RPA consultants deal with (office) automation we should be aware of the impact our work will have long term.

The report looks at trends in the US for occupations from 1980 – 2016 and how professions and wages are impacted. This as the US has a clear classifications of professions thus allowing for longitudinal studies.

The report concludes:

  • Those in office administration, production, transportation and food preparation are most vulnerable to automation
  • 70% of tasks involved in these jobs has been deemed “high risk” for automation
  • They represent 25% of all jobs in the US
  • Men, young workers and underrepresented communities tend to work in professions most impacted by Automation
  • The lower your educational level, the higher the risk of your job being at risk of Automation
  • The impact of Automation on wages will be significant, especially on lower and middle wage brackets

The report can be found here.

Very helpful summary. A lot more needs to be done by people and firms to identify, prepare and adapt to this growing trend
