Navigating the Future of Energy, AI, and Efficient Data Centers

Energy isn’t just a resource; it’s the backbone of economic progress and global competitiveness. Earlier this week, Dell Technologies and NVIDIA co-hosted an industry forum inside the D.C. Beltway to discuss the future of AI infrastructure and energy. From next-gen data centers to grid resilience, we brought together industry leaders and government officials to explore how energy efficiency can help ensure that AI achieves its full potential to bolster the U.S. economy and keep us at the forefront of innovation.

Steve Clemons led this important discussion with me, Josh Parker , and Congressman August Pfluger together with energy leaders Lou Hrkman , Tyler Anthony , Tanya Das, Ph.D. , and David Young, about the enormous opportunity we see at the intersection of energy and AI to to meet society's growing needs.

The Critical Need for Energy

AI and energy are deeply connected, and together, they are driving progress across industries. AI needs reliable, resilient, affordable and sustainable energy to unlock its full potential. However, the role of energy in powering AI solutions is often overlooked. While many recognize the convenience and capability AI provides, the infrastructure making this possible is often hidden from view. It’s time to shine a light on the critical need for energy reliability in maintaining advancements in AI.

Attendees referenced the importance of net new generating capacity that is “affordable, reliable and sustainable” throughout the event.

The Case for Modernizing U.S. Energy Infrastructure for AI 

Resilience in energy supply is a necessity for AI to reach its full potential and without a significant increase in energy supply, the full benefits of AI in driving economic growth and job creation may be restricted. Modernizing the U.S. energy infrastructure is therefore essential. Initiatives like demand-side grid management, AI-powered grid modernization and data-center colocation can all help strengthen our energy infrastructure.

This modernization relies on collective effort and collaboration. Leaders from the technology, energy and policy sectors must come together to expand energy capacity, strengthen grid reliability, and explore innovative energy solutions.

Turning Insight into Impact

Meeting the energy needs of AI demands leadership, foresight and investment from all stakeholders. Governments must create policies supported by a stable regulatory environment that gives industry the confidence to make the long-term investments needed to deliver the economic benefits of energy and AI. Businesses can lead the charge by investing in energy-efficient infrastructure and adopting smarter energy management strategies.

For companies, the message is clear: investments in energy-efficient AI infrastructure not only foster innovation but also offer a competitive edge. AI has extraordinary potential, but realizing its benefits for society requires careful planning. This includes “right-sizing” AI solutions for fitting specific needs, avoiding unnecessary energy use, and planning for long-term scalability.

Dell is providing the infrastructure for AI and advocates for the delivery of reliable, resilient and affordable energy supported by modern digital grid technology. Achieving meaningful progress requires collaboration across the public and private sectors, driving innovation while addressing energy challenges.
