My top 10 sessions on DrupalCon Europe 2020
DrupalCon Europe, the biggest Drupal-oriented conference in Europe, is starting tomorrow. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, it's happening online instead of sunny Barcelona. While preparing for the conference, I picked over 60 sessions, I'd like to see. Read my pick of the top 10 sessions of this year's event.
Drupal and Gatsby, static without limits. Compiling more than 100,000 pages in less than what it takes to make a coffee - link
I'm really interested in this session because I recently helped to build covid.gov.cz - Czech government COVID website. We decided to use Gatsby as well, but our build takes quite a lot of time. From this session, I expect some tips and tricks on how to optimize it.
Building diversity job boards with Drupal - link
My colleague Martin Lenz is going to talk about how we build more inclusive niche job boards for our customers.
Monitoring Kubernetes Drupal Clusters using Distributed Tracing. - link
We just recently started migrating our overseas customers to Kubernetes and I feel that monitoring is one thing we need to improve. I want to compare the tools we're using with Ricardo's selection for the Acquia platform and how we can integrate them into our stack.
Decoupled translations with Drupal - link
We were dealing with decoupled translations on covid.gov.cz as well. We were looking for maximum flexibility for content editors and it wasn't as easy as when you have a monolithic Drupal site.
Drupal initiative leads keynote - link
I watched this keynote from DrupalCon Global and it's a superb overview of all active initiatives. Although I'm trying to be an active member of the Drupal community, it's sometimes hard to stay on track because Drop is always changing :)
Moving Drupal forward by breathing new life into local community - link
I'm helping to run Czech and Slovak Drupal communities. I'm not going to lie, sometimes it's hard work and needs a lot of self-motivation. It will be nice to hear someone else's experience and struggles.
Configuration Management Initiative 2.0 - link
Configuration Management is one of the top features of Drupal 8 for me. It's so easy to use instead of Drupal 7 ways of managing the configuration. There is always room for improvements that should be tackled by CMI2.0. I'm excited to learn an update from Fabian and find out all improvements since our last encounter at our Prague meetup.
QA Automation: Removing repetitive tasks while giving real value - link
There is a fine line between being cautious and wasting resources. Automation can be both. I feel that we might be dealing with the same issues as the Nestle team in this case and I want to compare our approaches and find out what we can improve.
Visual regression testing - link
My colleague Joao is going to talk about how we're keeping all our designs pixel-perfect during the project's life cycle.
The state of Drupal Development Environments panel discussion - link
I like listening to this panel and comparing it to previous years. I think I can predict that Docker-based solutions will be the most popular. The question is only which one is the king amongst them:) Most of our developers are using DDEV, the rest is using Lando. I like the flexibility of DDEV, which I wasn't able to discover in Lando so far.
Must see: Driesnote - session and Q&A
Driesnote - the keynote of Drupalverse presented by Dries Buytaert, Drupal project creator and lead, is simply a must-see of the conference. Dries usually presents the status of Drupal world, challenges, and vision for next years. I hope there will be some nice demos this year :)
Bonus: Trivia night - link
Can you imagine DrupalCon Thursday night without Trivia night? I made the mistake of missing it on my first DrupalCon and I'm not going to do it again. Tip: Find out what is the first node ID and no, it's not 1.
So this is my ultimate list of sessions I want to see. It's probably more DevOps oriented because that's my main focus right now, but I'm sure that everyone will find a couple of sessions to watch. Winter is coming, so plenty of time for watching recordings as well.
But hey, Drupalcon isn't only about sessions. It's mostly about meeting friends and new people. If you're interested in what we're doing at Jobiqo, find me, Martin, or Joao on the OnAir platform, and let's talk together. I'm looking forward to meeting you there and hopefully next year to meet you all in real life.
