Moving towards an Intelligent World
Early in the Morning, My Alarm doesn't go off and allows me to sleep more as my conference call got postponed at the last moment. After an hour, I get up and my phone shows only 7 mails that need my immediate attention. I reply to those mails and enter bathroom. Water temperature is already adjusted based on my behavior over time. As soon as come out of shower, it signals my coffee maker to go to work. Coffee maker checks my health statistics from my phone and improved statistics allows it to prepare my favorite blend using whole milk. While I am sipping coffee, my car is geared up with the fastest route to new customer location it got from my mails. My car is driving me to work and my phone is pushing important mails and updates for me to be ready for customer presentation. It also tells me that my car servicing will be completed today during the office hours. Based on my preference for walking, my vehicle parks itself bit away in parking lot.”
- Above scenario is more around individual productivity. Similarly any significant enterprise class solution has to be an integration of IOT, automation, M2M Communication and multiple other technology areas stitched together. As of now market is having lot of point solutions but an integrated picture is yet to emerge.
- Slowly, Demarcation of Personal and professional time is blurring. Any Productivity solution that restricts itself due to cost sharing, integration or interfacing issues will face challenges in realizing full ROI potential and hence adoption.
- IOT holds a lot of promise for consumer class applications, but for its comprehensive success key lies in enterprise applications and adoption. Consumer space no doubt is the favorite breeding ground for IOT still it is equally important for market not to overlook enterprise class opportunities and definitely not to look at them in silos.
- The major success factors for adoption of telephony, internet, cloud or analytics has been underlying ecosystem to support, develop and compete across multiple layers of spectrum driven by few key players. For IOT development, many of the key players are yet to live up to role of market drivers. As of now, its startups that are developing new interesting platforms, tools and features. I strongly feel, we might see few market leading organizations emerging from this lot despite strong chances of takeovers.
- Next generation of service provider will have to play an enhanced role of technology integrator to solve a business problem using different technology levers ranging from automation, IOT, analytics, integrations, AI and M2M Communication. Under the layer of heavy marketing material, most of the organizations have ‘silo’ technology based approach. It might sound cliché but Organizations will have to eventually move to a design that promotes cross technology thinking and actions.
- IOT presents a new opportunities and threats for traditional facility management companies as eventually a lot of activities under facilities management will merge with IT support.
Market is abuzz with IOT and significant opportunities it presents. To me, long term success lies in how it integrates with other technology areas to move towards an intelligent world.
