Moving to AWS – Application Migration with Kyndryl

Moving to AWS – Application Migration with Kyndryl

In this quick blog, we will discuss Kyndryl’s high-level approach to application modernization and how you can succeed moving your applications to Amazon Web Services and gain the benefits of the cloud.

Choosing your cloud platform is an excellent beginning to application transformation, though only the initial step in your digital transformation journey. You will need a proven migration method and an experienced team of skilled practitioners for success. Kyndryl has teamed with Amazon Web Services to provide you with a partner who understands migration challenges and has the skills & experience to make you successful as you move your applications to the AWS platform.

The following are common use cases and patterns you may encounter in your cloud journey:

  • Retire or use SaaS options: Reducing the size of the estate through a mix of application retirement and Software as a Service (SaaS) replacement.
  • Rehost: Moving the bulk of the remaining application portfolio, working with a single cloud provider as quickly as possible.
  • Re-platform or Refactor: Transform the migrated applications, where developers and engineers can take advantage of the new cloud environment.

Kyndryl will work with you to understand your application plan through differentiators of Reduce, Move, or Transform. Across the different patterns, we described our team at Kyndryl has developed a proven, scalable methodology, developed over many years and hundreds of thousands of migrations that closely aligns with Amazon’s Well-Architected Framework (WAF).

Kyndryl will first work with your application, infrastructure, and business teams to understand your goals and drivers for moving to or within AWS. Typically, we find that companies want to reduce operations costs and provide agility with new cloud capabilities. However, your business may have other drivers such as security, operational resilience, aging hardware/software, data center consolidation, global scalability, or new technology strategies like machine learning or the internet of things.

Kyndryl breaks the modernization strategy into 3 stages: Discovery & Analysis, Planning, and Execution. We suggest using an agile approach and leveraging the 3 stages across your companies application portfolio.

Discovery & Analysis

First, we want to touch on the Discovery & Analysis Process. Discovery for a migration and modernization program is an activity performed throughout the project and has two specific objectives: inventory data collection and gathering intelligence to develop the migration patterns and plan.

Kyndryl will collaborate with your application & infrastructure teams to gather information available in the environment to accelerate discovery. We will also bring expertise and knowledge of automated discovery tools from AWS and other partners, as well, techniques to supplement the existing data for deeper analysis and insights. Kyndryl’s discovery process will create the following:

  • A discovery data repository – to give migration engineers deeper insights to formulate a migration strategy
  • Complete application dependency mapping
  • Intelligent cloud migration prioritization strategy
  • IaaS and PaaS Cost modeling

Kyndryl leverages tools such as AWS Migration Evaluator, AWS Application Discovery Service, Flexera Cloudscape, Kyndryl proprietary tools, and other utilities based on your needs and environment.

Kyndryl can quickly discover the first iteration of data collection to allow for quick start markets in about two weeks, whereas an overall assessment may take 4-12 weeks, depending on the size of the environment and architecture. The quick start will lead to the migration of 1-3 applications in less than a month to demonstrate the process and obtain application user confidence.

Migration Planning

Next, we want to share that Kyndryl has developed a Migration Planning Engine which includes a system of processes, techniques, and tools to plan your application migration and modernization project effectively. Included in the Kyndryl engine are the following:

  • Application migration Quick Starts
  • Application migration pattern identification (i.e., the 7 Rs)
  • Mapping application portfolio to AWS VPC design
  • Sprint and plan strategy
  • Event Runbook creation and development
  • Governance model to eliminate impact to the business

Migration specialists will analyze the discovery data to generate insights on the source environment that help formulate a migration strategy based on their characteristics and dependency relationships.

Migration Execution

The final stage before operations in the AWS target is the execution. During the Migration Execution phase, the Kyndryl team reviews migration readiness, creates migration runbooks, rehearses the migration plan, and implements the migration event.

Key deliverables for the migration phase include:

  • Migration Event Playbook
  • Individual Event Runbooks
  • Lessons Learned Documentation

Working in partnership with AWS, Kyndryl follows AWS and industry best practices and uses the best migration tools to meet the client’s migration goals. Our Kyndryl team of Cloud Migration and Modernization Architects and Subject Matter Experts are continuously improving their skills through hands-on training for AWS cloud-native migration tools and services.

Kyndryl teams can conduct migration events after business hours, during the weekend, or in a single migration event for clients with unique or strict scheduling requirements. Whatever the requirement, our Kyndryl team is ready and able to provide our clients with the best migration experiences possible.

AWS Migration Tools

As mentioned, Kyndryl is knowledgeable and proficient in all the AWS migration tools and services available to complete the migration execution phase. Our teams regularly receive AWS-led training to keep up to date on the latest AWS technologies.

Some of the AWS migration tools we utilize include:

In conclusion, Kyndryl’s world-class modernization approach combines AWS’s migration process of Assess, Mobilize, and Migration & Modernize with industry-leading experience, skills, and techniques. Using these AWS tools, the Kyndryl team can complete migrations for a small, medium, or large number of workloads.
