Meaningful Initiation

Many societies, clubs, tribes, and professions have initiation rituals of one kind or another. Some research suggests that more severe rituals result in the group members valuing the group more highly. In some cases, this can backfire. The suggested Pattern: "Meaningful Initiation" suggests that initiations can be structured as meaningful and necessary work rather than only as difficult random and possibly dangerous tasks.
